The other survivors begin to hear whispers that the government has created a cure for their disease, and some question whether the camps are all that bad. Having firsthand experience with the abuse in the camps, Ruby makes it her mission to publicly expose them in any way she can. Even with the book's slow start, narrator Amy McFadden breathes life into Ruby as she guides listeners through the planning, betrayal, and climatic conclusion of her story. A few sexual situations and mild language make this appropriate for slightly older teens. Listeners should have prior knowledge of the events in the first two titles, as it is unclear exactly how the kids got to their situation. The conclusion to the Darkest Minds series is as tense, emotional, and brutal as one would expect. When the book begins, Ruby and the survivors of the attack on Los Angeles are on the move again, with a very important prisoner in tow: President Gray's son, Clancy. Ruby and Clancy share a mind meld that affects much of the book's almost nonstop action, but it is her relationships with brothers Cole and Liam that will most intrigue readers. The plotline has plenty of twists, up until the last page, but without divulging too much, it's safe to say fans will appreciate the well-thought-out conclusion. ―Booklist Online

By far one of the most original and greatest series I've ever read!

'In the Afterlight' is the explosive final book in the young adult science fiction/dystopian Darkest Minds series. Usually I do a small recap of the general plot of the book at the beginning of my reviews, but I'm going to skip the pretense and get right down to it. To be honest, I have no idea how to write this review - let alone what to write. I have a love/hate relationship with series endings (I imagine most people do). I want to know want happens in the end - happily ever after or not? But then again, I don't want the series to end. Why can't it just keep going for a few more books? It's honestly the definition of bittersweet. I don't do spoilers in my reviews, so it's going to be next to impossible to give many details without something slipping out.

In order to talk about the final book in the trilogy, you have to go back to the beginning. In the first installment, we met our main character - Ruby - and learned about the deadly epidemic killing the majority of American kids and the "rehabilitation camps" where kids and teens with special abilities are sent. By the end of the first book, we're rooting our hearts out for Ruby and Liam and desperately waiting to see where things will go from there. I (like most other readers whose reviews I've read) was deep inside the story and totally vested in the characters. None of this changed in the second book - if anything, I was drawn even deeper into the story alongside the characters. Then the final book comes - and you know, logically, that it's the end and big things are probably going to happen. This knowledge, however, doesn't keep you from experiencing the intense emotional roller coaster that comes next. The writing was superb as always. Everything from the setting and the characters to the dialogue and the plot itself was done with such attention to detail and vivid descriptions and imagery that I easily fell right back into the story as if I had never left. And I stayed in there alongside Ruby until the very end - feeling everything she felt and then some. Let's just say it was intense (to put it mildly). I honestly don't know what else to say about this book that won't give anything away, and nothing else can come close to giving it the justice it deserves. I can honestly say that this book - this series - is unlike anything I've encountered before in the genre. I loved the psychic kids with their varying colors and abilities. I loved rooting for Ruby and the rest of them as they fought against the government to gain their freedom and reveal the truth. Heck, I even loved the tension in the story when things were going badly and I wasn't sure what was going to happen next. Everything about this trilogy is simply mesmerizing - I literally lost myself in the world the author created and didn't really come back out until the very end of the last book. I won't lie - I wish there were more books coming in the series. There's so much potential for the characters and different plots that could spin off. I'm sad to see it end, but I know I'll be re-reading these books over and over for years to come. That being said, I can't wait to see what the author will come out with next. I have no idea what it might be about, but I do know that with her incredible talent and ability, I will have to get my hands on it. I can't recommend this book - or series - enough. I think everyone who enjoys YA fiction - and even those who don't - should read these books. There's something for everyone and the writing alone will blow you away - not to mention the characters and the plot itself. Do yourself a favor if you haven't read these yet: Make sure the next book you pick up is The Darkest Minds and hold on for one amazing ride.

Powerfully well-written, far beyond the quality of Twilight (C-D quality writing), The Maze Runner (B quality writing, but dry and "cold"), and The Hunger Games (B+/A- quality writing, but arresting and interesting content and plotlines). This is A-level writing, A-level story, A-level character development, page-turning, gut wrenching, deep and evolved YA content that will satisfy both teens and adults alike. And it is deep. If you're trying to develop a young teen's mind in your life or at school, challenge them, etc., you cannot go wrong with this and the rest of the series. Features a strong, complex female heroine of depth and nuance.

Who would have thought there was a craft to writing?

The goal of writing in science is to communicate information. Unfortunately too many people in science, including myself, write in a manner that is little more than unintelligible. Having read this book, I now feel sorry for the people who had to read my work. Too much scientific literature is poorly crafted and it is only natural that newcomers try to science emulate this poor style.

As a reader of scientific literature, I always though there was something wrong with me because I could not read the articles. I would get stuck on a passage and, no matter how hard I tried, I would not be able to get past it. Now I know that this is because the writing is poorly crafted.

The Craft of Scientific Writing gives an appreciation of the flaws that we all make in our writing. There are plentiful examples of poor writing, which are contrasted with good writing styles. Also, the explanations are clear and easy to understand.

Despite appearances, there is no rule, man-made or natural, that says that scientific writing cannot be clear, crisp and fluid. If you write any kind of scientific literature do yourself a favour and read this book. It will help you to become a better writer.

Funny yet complete and structurated

This is a good book to start with. The book gives an outline of the structure and rules of scientific writing. The tone is always funny yet always complete and usefull. It is full with practical examples that complement the text. The only drawback is that most examples -not all- are taken from engeneering and similar sciences and thay may sound extrange to biologist or scientists from other areas. I would recomend this books to young scientists and students that are looking to improve their writing skills.

We (the GeoWriting class at OU) recommend this book to beginning scientific writers. Alley's writing style is straightforward, making the book easy to understand. The chapter titles are precisely labeled, allowing one to quickly locate information on specific stylistic problems. Furthermore, Alley writes the way he tells us to write; far from being hypocritical, he practices what he preaches.

Specifically, Alley makes it clear to younger scientists that it is okay to write short sentences. His use of specific examples helped us be more fluid and concise in our writing. He also gave specific advice on how and when to include details, which was an area we had trouble with.

Aside from improving our writing, this book was also useful in understanding how read and critique other papers by providing examples of common mistakes. Naturally, for our own writing, Alley also gives ideas on how to fix those mistakes. Compared to textbooks from other writing courses we've taken, this book includes useful information, rather than merely giving writing examples (e.g., short stories).

On the downside, Alley's examples often focused too much on engineering applications; he should have included more examples from other sciences. At times the examples are also too long and it seems like Alley goes off on a tangent. Finally, while figures used are relevant to what is discussed, the lack of color makes them boring.

Overall, this book is more readable, but less dense than the average textbook. It is worth the money for a course text. We certainly got $12 worth of information out of it.

Nice swiss lookbook, informative, a few issues

I own Brockmann's full library, and this is one of my favorite books. Insightful, informative, and a great example of swiss design as well a visual narrative of a key graphic designer. In German, English, and French. Topics include importance of content in advertising (type, photography, illustration, color, logo, brand name, uniformity), exhibition work, and more about building process and skill.

I do, have a few issues with the book, most of them are in the construction: as this is a reprint done after Josef's death I figure these issues are not related to the original book, more the one sold on amazon. For a book created by the master on layouts, and designing around the consistency of a grid, it's disappointing to see that this book is the only one to have a european spine in his full set. I have a friend with an older copy of the book containing a western spine, which I'd prefer. (I know this is picky, but it's disappointing to see that someone has decided to alter JMB's design, and makes me concerned that other changes were made as well.)

Additionally, the unjacketed cover is constructed well, but with poor material choices. A linen paper was used on the cover, which provides an awesome texture, but the paper they used is tragically thin. Because of this, the bright white cover is left with a dirty-looking gray undertone. Additionally I had a hickey (from the printing press). The rest of the book was very impressive. Jacketed cover is also a significantly ligher gray.

A definite purchase for ANY graphic designer, also check out Raster Systeme (Grid Systems) by JMB. That book completely revolutionized my designs, and way of thinking. :D

Write design

I bought a copy recently and it's like returning to an old friend. I had the original when it was published in 1961 and kept it on my desk at the office. It was always being looked through by colleagues, pages copied, dropped on the floor, borrowed (and luckily returned) but as is the way with office books it eventually disappeared. I was familiar enough with the pages not to buy a copy until nostalgia got the better of me and I thought I really should own a new edition.

Despite the contents being over fifty years old what JM-B writes is still relevant today, not in the sense that pages are full of hands-on information, though there is some of that in the text but more a philosophical approach to commercial creativity which is revealed to the reader by studying the displayed work. The majority of this has been created by JM-B during the fifties and nicely cover a wide range of print material. My favorite sections are the series of posters for the Zurich Tonhalle Gesellschaft, these are just timeless designs, the other is the student work in the last chapter, some of the graphic design and typography is quite remarkable.

Obviously the digital age was decades away when the book was first published and maybe website designers might strain to find anything of relevance to their creative output but companies still need print: brochures; magazine; booklets; letterheads; reports; packaging; logos and more. These pages will provide the inspiration to design problems.

Excellent Resource

I have just completed a graduate course in Assessment for teachers of ELLs. Almost all of the students in this class, including me, found this book to be a very valuable resource. Some of the information is redundant, but for a teacher looking for ideas on how to construct an authentic assessment of student work (reading, writing, speaking or listening) it is full of great insights and models that can be copied from the book or revised for individual use.

The Best Assessment Book I've Seen

I bought this for an ESL Assessment class at the graduate level. I also teach ESL at a university, and this book comes in very handy, both in theory and in practice. I especially like the rubrics you give to students so they can assess their own strengths and weaknesses. For example, when working together in groups, students fill out a form after their work is done, stating how well they listened, asked for clarification, or offered/asked for opinions. I continue to use this book long after I've taken the class, and I believe this is the best assessment book out there. Don't waste your time (or money) on books like "ESL Assessment: On the Yellow Big Road to the Withered of Oz" (or whatever the title of that book is!)

Buy this book and you won't regret it. A winner!

A Breath of Fresh Air

A wonderfully cogent analysis of the extremely destructive results of the belief in Johovah, Yahweh, Allah--basicly the monotheistic male god. For those happy with the existing level of greed, corruption, mayhem, and murder in our world, by all means skip this book. These thousand-plus year old religions have had ample opportunity to improve the world and failed miserably. For the rest of us, Walker's book provides good suggestions for getting the capricious God as he is represented in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam completely out of our heads. She provides a healthful, sane alternative for the part of our minds that needs a symbolic mystery for life-giving satisfaction. The ancient Goddess can provide a far better example for a meaningful, sane life than the destructive beliefs we find around us as particularly exemplified by fundamentalists of all stripes--although the negative effects of the father God are not limited to fundamentalists. Walker provides a positive, joyful alternative to the father gods. As she correctly puts it in describing patriarchal religion, "There is no baby in that bathwater."

this should be required reading

I first read The Skeptical Feminist years and years ago and it was my first exposure to the idea that the status quo of male only deity, male domination and patriarchy was unfair to women. This sounds naive now. I was so blown away when I read this book, I was in a panic at the notion that it hadn't been read by everyone in the world. This book opened my eyes to the idea that there is something other than the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. There is the Mother, the Daughter, the Crone, and they are FEMALE! The goddess who, but for patriarchy, would be lovingly caring for the world today, is making a comeback, and I say fervently BE IT SO! This book is fairly vitriolic in its condemnation of what men have wrought over the centuries, but when you read about all the atrocities women have had to endure in the name of false male authority supported by the Judeo Christian deity, I say read this book. Then read more books, particularly The Chalice and the Blade and The First Sex. Read about what happened to the women who died for nothing, just so men could stay on top. It will open your eyes.
