A Breath of Fresh Air

A wonderfully cogent analysis of the extremely destructive results of the belief in Johovah, Yahweh, Allah--basicly the monotheistic male god. For those happy with the existing level of greed, corruption, mayhem, and murder in our world, by all means skip this book. These thousand-plus year old religions have had ample opportunity to improve the world and failed miserably. For the rest of us, Walker's book provides good suggestions for getting the capricious God as he is represented in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam completely out of our heads. She provides a healthful, sane alternative for the part of our minds that needs a symbolic mystery for life-giving satisfaction. The ancient Goddess can provide a far better example for a meaningful, sane life than the destructive beliefs we find around us as particularly exemplified by fundamentalists of all stripes--although the negative effects of the father God are not limited to fundamentalists. Walker provides a positive, joyful alternative to the father gods. As she correctly puts it in describing patriarchal religion, "There is no baby in that bathwater."

this should be required reading

I first read The Skeptical Feminist years and years ago and it was my first exposure to the idea that the status quo of male only deity, male domination and patriarchy was unfair to women. This sounds naive now. I was so blown away when I read this book, I was in a panic at the notion that it hadn't been read by everyone in the world. This book opened my eyes to the idea that there is something other than the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. There is the Mother, the Daughter, the Crone, and they are FEMALE! The goddess who, but for patriarchy, would be lovingly caring for the world today, is making a comeback, and I say fervently BE IT SO! This book is fairly vitriolic in its condemnation of what men have wrought over the centuries, but when you read about all the atrocities women have had to endure in the name of false male authority supported by the Judeo Christian deity, I say read this book. Then read more books, particularly The Chalice and the Blade and The First Sex. Read about what happened to the women who died for nothing, just so men could stay on top. It will open your eyes.

Stepping up and out of condemnation

How many times have we walked past stroke victims – in the parks, on benches, in beds – and just thought that damaging part of the brain that results in loss of various normal functions of the body is a fate worse than death. Stop. Right there. And read STROKE VICTOR. This may very easily be us at some point in the future and like Bob Mandell we too can just refuse to become the vegetable that cerebrovascular accidents produce. Refresher terms: a stroke is what happens when not enough blood (and thus oxygen and nutrition) reaches a part of the brain. The medical term for stroke is cerebrovascular accident, or CVA. There are three types of strokes - thrombotic stroke (a blood clot forms in an artery and blocks the flow of blood), embolic stroke (a blood clot forms in another part of the body and moves to the brain), and hemorrhagic stroke (a weak blood vessel in the brain bursts and blood moves into the brain tissue. The brain cells and tissue do not receive oxygen and nutrients and this results in aphaisa, ataxia, apraxia, dysarthria, dysphasia, hemeparesis, and hemiplegia.

Excellent!

Stroke Victor is a very easy read. It is no-nonsense. It is not verbose. It gets straight to the point. If you've never had a stroke or known someone who has, then you may only wish to read the first few chapters. The later chapters are comprised of helpful tips, motivators and other information which is only germane to those who have had a stroke.

It's an interesting read and only occasional profane. It gets raw sometimes, as Mandell describes what he's thinking and feeling. The thing about a stroke is that it can manifest in any one of few different ways. When a dear relative of ours had a stroke, he became an almost literal six-year-old who was angry with us since there was clearly (in his mind) nothing wrong with him. He would have become violent if we hadn't convinced him that we were going to punch him in the face. We actually drew our fist back, so as to be poised for believability. He was undergoing psychoses as well.

In this sense, we feel that it's easy to identify with the author. Granted, his stroke was completely different. However, there are a few similarities. Mandell is also occasionally funny.

Overall, it's short, well-written and to-the-point. You owe yourself a read if you think that you will ever be in this horrendous situation, of either having a stroke yourself, or being in the caregiver position for another who has.

GREAT BOOK

A friend recommended this book to me as a good and easy read even though I had no stroke motive for reading it. I found the book to be very enlightening on a topic which I previously didn’t know much about- strokes and the lengthy recovery process. Personally, I’m in awe of the author that he was able to recover with the strength that he did. I also was impressed to see that there were no bounds or parameters regarding the topics he chose to include in the book. For example, he approached regaining his sexual life with humor and courage. Over all, I honestly found the book to be a great read that was both informative and personal. Something like that is so rare in novels nowadays! I appreciated that he included info about stroke research and I’ve already visited the website “strokevictor.com” His writing style was one which reached out to the audience and really pulls you in. If he were planning on writing anything in the future I’d definitely be interested in giving it a read.

Not as good as Silent Night from the same publisher

I bought this book because we liked the Silent Night one that came out a few years ago. In that book, softly fluctuating lights surrounded Baby Jesus as gentle music played. In The Little Drummer Boy, a startlingly bright and frenetically flashing star shoots out of Joseph's ear in what appears to be an attempt at inducing seizures. Probably for legal reasons, the music is not the familiar "Little Drummer Boy" song, but a not-so-bad tune with a "rum-pa-pum-pum" drum rhythm in the background. Not-so-bad, that is, until your child has played it for the fiftieth time. I wonder who we can give this to . . .

Review of my recent purchase

I purchased this book from another company and loved it. That book came wrapped in cellophane. I thought I was buying new books when I purchased these. We're obviously used. Not wrapped in cellophane, and one of the books had dead batteries in it. Since I buy these books for charity, I replaced the batteries and said nothing. Glad you asked.

Not the original drummer boy song but my toddlers love to push the button and hear the music. It is quite loud, so not one I let them play without me there to muffle the speaker a bit.

What a disappointment! Great content however the poor spelling and translated information takes away the credibility of the subject. Did anyone even proof read the Kindle edition? I would have given it a 1 star but I didn't "hate it" -- still has a lot of relevant points - just painful to get through them.

A journey-

Unlike so many self-help books that are preachy and tedious to read, here you are lead through a heartbreaking yet wonderful fable of the black swan. It appealed to the child in me because it was told like a children's story. If you love being led, rather than being preached at, you will love this book. It's a real treasure.

This is not a surface read! Excellent allegory--must read.

Read this when you have time to ponder the depth and scope of its meaning. I've read this story several times now and each time I discover a new treasure of meaning. Abandoment issues are all about the condition of one's heart and this beautiful allegory spins a tale to recovery. Very powerful.

don't go into the subject test without this!

Following McMullen's plan of attack, I went through his must-read list name by name, a little every day (o.k., every other day), working my way through the Norton Anthologies and the new Oxford Companion to English Literature which has synopses of plays and novels -- often on the test all you need to know is the name of some of the characters and the author to clinch the question. I spent over $150 in books, but they'll come in handy once I'm in grad school anyway. I haven't received my score yet but I know I could have done better only if I'd given myself more time and had a better memory -- through no fault of the book. Also helpful was the book of tests published by ETS -- they really prepare you. As another reviewer mentioned, the test contains more 20th c., African-American and new theory questions (phenomenological criticism?) than the guide warns but that's the only criticism. Good luck!

Great Guide -- Use the Masterplots series too.

The "Cracking" series are valuable for whatever test you are taking. I've used this one and the GRE Cat, and they work without wasting your time like so many others.
May I offer you all a suggestion? I came across the Magill series on Literature (usually found in reference sections of the library) and found them invaluable for getting a concise, well-written synopsis on the novels, poetry, drama etc. that will be covered on the test. I zeroed in on the suggested reading list offered by the "Cracking" book, studied for about 4 weeks, and got a 96% on the test. Good luck to you all, and let me know if you've used my sage advice,ok?

Good, not great

This book definitely helps take away some test anxiety by explaining that it is ok to be overwhelmed by how difficult the test is. It gives great studying tips and explanations for the exam.

I must confess that I admire that this book admits that it cannot cover everything; however, it left out a major components that were on my exam. I took the exam in April '07 and was slammed in the face with post-modern and even contemporary literature from around the globe. Tough questions, not the basics that we all should know by now. Also, the criticism questions dealt with things not even mentioned in the book. I'm talking like 20% of the test being on things I never anticipated. So much for getting rid of test anxiety.

To be fair, I have yet to find any kind of study help for this growing section of the exam. Just be advised that this book skipped it completely. So you'd better find it elsewhere.

This is an excellent review as to how we devolved in our thinking

This is an excellent review as to how we devolved in our thinking, initially conceiving of God as being the dynamic active missionary God we find in Scripture, to the timeless and unmoved mover found in classical theology. R. T. Mullins is correct in saying "Divine timelessness has had a long run in Church history, but it is time to bury it and move on. We should not mourn its passing. It shall not be missed," (p.209). If you wish to look at the biblical, philosophical and practical implications of looking at God with a fresh perspective, then this book is for you. Rather than conceiving of God as non-temporal we need to re-conceptualize God as being supremely temporal, indeed its chief exemplification! This book is not just another nail but is instead a golden spike in the coffin of a non-biblical timeless God. I encourage all to read this book!

This is how scholarship should be done. Dr. Mullins' grasp of the subject matter is incredible, as is his research and documentation. He systematically examines the traditional doctrine of divine timelessness and all that it entails (simplicity, immutability, impassibility) and addresses, by various arguments, the problems that the traditional doctrine faces. Throughout the work Dr. Mullins also seems particularly concerned with actually arriving at a coherent conception of God, or at least the clearest conception that is possible to us humans. This leads him to follow the argument wherever it leads rather than - as is often the case - simply unquestionably accepting ancient doctrines which appear on close scrutiny to be unintelligible. For this reason the author gets my respect and admiration. This book is concerned with what is true, not with what some theologian at some point wrote about. Furthermore the author takes pains to show you why certain "traditional" notions simply cannot be logically compatible with Christianity (though the more history that is done the more obvious it is that almost any possible belief was at one time held in Christian history).

Interestingly, the author supposedly set out to defend divine timelessness, but his research lead him to disbelieve in the very thing he set out to accept. This is another mark of genuine and honest reflection as well as serious and unbiased thinking.

This book furthers the discussion of God's relation to time and creation more than any other work I know. It is much more metaphysically powerful than the popular books on the topic, and the author addresses head on the leading theories (and theorists) of divine timelessness today. In my view his arguments are decisive, and his handling of the topic in general superb. One simply cannot be well informed about the current timeless vs temporal debate without reading this book and poring over its contents.

I did, however, wish that more time was spent exploring the alternative to divine timelessness - in particular the notion of God's essential and accidental properties, and how this idea can be cashed out in terms of God's being prior to and subsequent to creation as well as how God currently experiences change while relating to every moment of present time. This lack does not take away from the devastating criticisms the author makes against timelessness, of course. And the author does mention a desire to address such issues in further work. Thus finishing the book feels a bit like having one's spoiled supper taken away with the promise of something new and fresh -- which is on the way. While we are no doubt saved from eating something rotten, we are still quite hungry! I await future writings both patiently and with a bit of a growl in my tummy.
