Great Book

This book is really comprehensive. It has many pictures and descriptions of them to help you along with the forms. I'm taking a Tai Chi class at my college, and this book is the perfect companion. It is very well layed out and can be easily followed. Of course it is always necessary to have an actual master, but this book is probably the best on the market. Many Tai Chi books are confusing and poorly made, but this is one of the few that is not. Learning Tai Chi straight from a book is a little silly, at least look for classes or a video. But this is the perfect companion piece to perfecting your Tai Chi. If you want to buy the best, this is the one - no question about it.

Not very helpful

As a student at Cheng-Man-ch'ing's school, starting the year before his death, I've never found this book particularly representative of Professor Cheng, though many people are fond of it. There are several other books that are much more helpful, including Professor's own "Master Cheng's New Method of Taichi Ch'uan Self-Cultivation" and "Cheng Tzu's Thirteen Treatises on T'ai Chi Ch'uan." In response to one other comment, I was never under the impression that he held anything back. Like any other good teacher, he was aware of what his students were prepared to absorb, and imparted information accordingly. Remember that he departed this world in 1975, a time when T'ai Chi was still relatively unknown in the West, and much of what he said and wrote went right over the heads of most of his students at that time. The thing that most of us tried to do was emulate his example of what could be attained through dedication, perseverance, and a joyful attitude.

An early, excellent text written specifically for Westerners

This text by famous grandmaster Cheng Man-ch'ing and his first Western student, the well-known martial arts authority, Robert W. Smith, was written specifically for Western readers. One of the very first books written in English about T'ai Chi (first published in the U.S. in 1967), it is the first to present Cheng's now famous Yang style short form. It is also provides an English translation (by R. W. Smith and T.T. Liang) of the extremely important T'ai Chi Classics which provide the written wisdom essential for understanding and progress.
The book includes pictures of Cheng doing the postures along with text describing them as well as a very helpful foldout chart showing the complete form. Other excellent chapters cover T'ai Chi history, T'ai Chi for a healthier life and the Principles of T'ai Chi. In the section, T'ai Chi for Self-Defense, Cheng is pictured (with T.T. Liang) in demonstrations of some of the postures such as "Turn Body and Sweep Lotus with Leg" in which he advises that the "...waist and thigh must be relaxed and sunk or the sweep will not be effective." In "Withdraw and Push," Cheng tells us that "The energy used must come from the leg, not the hands."
The section entitled "Yang Cheng-fu's Twelve Important Points" introduces Westerners to the insights of the Yang family, the originators of modern T'ai Chi and the ones to bring forth T'ai Chi to all of China and the world in general.
In "Questions and Answers," Smith asks Cheng a series of interesting questions. For example, "In doing the postures how does one know when he is relaxed?" (Relaxation, of course, is the first principle of T'ai Chi practice.) Also, he asks "How important is the Pushing-Hands Practice?" Cheng's answers to these and other insightful questions provide helpful guidance to a student at any level.
This early, excellent text would be an important addition to any T'ai Chi player's library.

Secrets Will Tear You Apart

OMG MINX, YOU HAVE DONE IT AGAIN!!! Mara &Trent's story was awesome. Trent had enough secrets to last a lifetime. He did piss me off when the look-alike part came out. The dinner with the parents was hilarious. I thought Mara & Trent were gonna pass out. I also liked Sophia. She knew how to handle her brother. Matt is getting a lil on my nerves with his "protectivenes" over Mara. She is a grown woman and he needs to realize she can take care of herself. Avery needed a beatdown an Mara should of given her one. I don't like that James went back to Avery just because Travis was his. She shouldn't be a part of their family. She wanted Trent since James left her. Drop her. Overall, this was good. I am SO looking foward to Bennett's book. I gotta buy Tank now.

my favorite book

What can i say about this series besides being awesome, and great as well as captivating. This book as well as the others was written beautifully. I could read Minx's books all day as long as i have lots of snacks, and juice. Trent and Mara's story had me going through all types of emotions. I totally loved it a lot.I can not wait for more.

M. Malone has done it again! You will never have a dull moment with this book. With each book you see the characters grow and her writing style just keeps getting better. We were first introduced to Mara & Trent in the novella, Teasing Trent. The characters draw you in and you can relate to the turmoil Mara feels in deciding if she can trust her man. M Malone surprises me with every book. I’m hooked on The Alexander’s!

This book is for anyone looking for; sex, lies, crying, overly protective brothers, dirty talking moms, more lies, stuck up sisters, THOT (That Hoe Over There), and a roller coaster of emotions.

Great Book

I use this book for a couple of years now in med school. Differential diagnosis is a tough subject to understand and to my surprise this book was the only one that did not let me down. As mentioned in JAMA it is indeed teaching the "art" of diagnosis. My learning strategy is to create diagrams and make my own notes. This book helps me in three ways:

1) firstly it is a COMPLETE book mentioning ALL possible diseases behind every symptom. I emphasize on the word "complete" because most powerfull books (like the famous Conrad Fischer's USMLE books) are incomplete. The writer was kind enough to analyze all possible causes of all symptoms in a way that makes sence, not just writing down a list. This makes it a good reference book in my library. Apart from the explanatory text, this differential diagnosis book has the most complete charts, and anatomy pictures for every symptom. Most symptoms are analyzed in tree ways, in text, in chart and in a "human body" figure.

2) Dr Collins takes you in a "journey" not by writing lists of possible causes, but helping you understand the "way of thinking" behind every symptom. It relates most causes with basic knowledge of anatomy or physiology making connections with your previous knowledge.

3) The third advantage is that the book is concise. Few words are enough for the writer to make his point and therefore, the book is quite "small" (about 500 pages) explaining all causes for every symptom.

I only wish Dr. Collins wrote a book with the same information listed by disease, not by symptoms. Also, the book doesn't containt any algorithms. The book contains a review of systems for each differential diagnosis. The information is easy to follow and to the point. A colleague of mine let me review the book before I bought it, however even if I bought the it before reveiwing it, it would still have been a keeper.

It was a thrill for me to write Dorothy Must Die. As a fan of the books, Oz felt like sacred ground. But stepping onto The Yellow Brick Road I saw a million other possibilities stretching out in front of me, some darker and twistier than the Oz we are used to, and I couldn’t resist. Here are some other trips down the Yellow Brick Road that I love.

The Wizard of Oz (1939, movie)
I was smitten from the very first notes of “Over the Rainbow.” The movie is just perfection. I have seen it so many times it’s almost embarrassing. It’s epic and timeless. And I still literally stop whatever I’m doing and watch when I see it on screen, because it’s just that good.

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of The West (1995, book)
Love! I bow to Gregory Maguire! Recasting the Wicked Witch of the West as truly misunderstood, instead of evil, was just a stroke of genius. And the musical is just as satisfying. (I was lucky enough to see it on Broadway with Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth. Just a fabulous production.)

Return to Oz (1985, movie)
It borrows so many deliciously creepy and quirky details from the Baum Books and makes up some new ones of its own. Seeing Mombi and her closet of interchangeable heads floored me.

Just total 70’s fun! Oz looks a lot like New York City. It’s star studded and unapologetic with a young Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow, Diana Ross as Dorothy, and Sidney Lumet directing. And try to get the songs out of your head. “Ease on Down the Road” is so catchy. And “Home” is just one of my all time favorites. (When Kristin Chenoweth sang it on Glee a few years ago, I was so happy!)

Leaps of logic distract from the overall story, and choppy language overwhelms at times, but teens will identify with the heroine's insecurities and feelings of abandonment caused by her parents' divorce and her mother's subsequent drug abuse. The tentative relationship that begins with one of her tutors seems a bit tacked on but will hopefully be developed more in future installments. Plot twists will keep readers guessing, and Amy's affinity to her pet mouse Star will garner some chuckles. Give this cinematic upper-YA novel to fans of A. G. I loved how the characters changed and how the story comes back to life one more time

I really like the Wizard of Oz mythology , specially when I was a kid and I was watching the cartoons so I was eager to read something else about it ,when I found out this twisted version of it I had my doubts but after checking all the reviews I said I will give it a go..I have to tell you this is amazing! Im loving it such a new and refreshed view of that old classic, the characters evolving and changing, defo worth reading.

About the Author
Editor Tim Baskerville has a diverse background in entertainment and media. He began his career in broadcasting after receiving a B.A. in theater arts from UCLA. Early affiliations included CBS and Cox Broadcasting, where he served as a writer-producer. The first TV documentary he created for CBS stations was nominated for an Emmy. As a publisher and entrepreneur, he launched business periodicals on the home video software industry, global film distribution, and multinational broadcasting. Today, a publishing company he founded in London in the 1990s is one of the world’s leading providers of data on mobile entertainment (www.informamedia.com). In recent years he served as President of Kagan Research, the leading provider of financial analysis on the media industry, and CEO of JupiterResearch, a key source of consumer research on Web behavior. As a consultant, Baskerville’s clients have included the Motion Picture Association of America, Variety, Time Warner, IBM, International Data Corp., Young & Rubicam, JVC America, Apple, and The Rockefeller Foundation. He has been both a strategy consultant and weekly columnist for Billboard. Baskerville was Vice President of the Music and Entertainment Industry Educators Association (MEIEA), member of the Writers Guild of America, west, and chapter founder of the Overseas Press Club of America.

The Best Choice for Music Business Courses!

This is a truly excellent book! As more and more colleges and universities are starting to teach courses in Music Business, Music Entrepreneurship, etc. this book is truly answering the call for an academic study of the "Music Industry." The closest substitute to this textbook would be All You Need to Know About the Music Business: Eighth Edition. However, this book is more of a nonfiction book for the curious reader at Barnes and Noble. "Music Business Handbook" offers greater depth and a wider perspective. I appreciate how this looks at both the "classical" and "mainstream" industries in music and also has great online tools to enhance learning.

I have adopted this textbook for my classes in Music Business and Leadership. After perusing a handful of books, this one easily rises to the top. If teaching in a classical music-based institution, I've found that Beyond Talent: Creating a Successful Career in Music is an excellent complement to this textbook.

Food and wine pairing with science in it

This is definitely one of the best-buys ever and one of the most important books in my bookshelf. Very little has been written on pairing wine and food that is worth reading: most of it is no more than someone telling the others what he/she liked with which (very specific) wine. This is, alongside with Evan Goldstein's Perfect Pairings: A Master Sommelier's Practical Advice for Partnering Wine with Food one of the very few books that actually teach you how to analyze the wine with the food and thus select the best pairings, also learning how to make educated guesses when it is not possible to taste one or both of them. Must-have for anyone in the wine business, from waiters and sommeliers to vendors and winemakers.

A must for any serious wine professional

Having been teaching professional wine and food pairing for over 20 years, I have collected many books on the subject. The vast majority are of limited practical use, as they simply tell you "this food goes with that wine", but not WHY!

At last, a book which really explains why ingredients in wine and constituents of foods go together or why they clash, in a really well-structured manner.

I strongly recommend this book.

Jennifer Raiser is a writer, strategist, business leader, and Burner. She has written for the San Francisco Chronicle, Huffington Post, Harvard Business School, and her online magazine, SFWire.com. She serves on the board of the Burning Man Project, volunteers as a Black Rock Ranger, and welcomes participants aboard the Kazbus Mutant Vehicle.

Sidney Erthal has had his camera poised for the past seven Burns which is how Burning Man aficionados carbon-date their experience with the festival. Born and educated in Brazil, he has lived in the San Francisco Bay area for the past decade.

Scott London is a longtime photographer of Burning Man, and his photos have appeared in Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, GQ, and National Geographic Traveler. He is the former host of NPR's "Insight and Outlook."

Larry Harvey is the Founder of Burning Man and Burning Man Project. Having missed making my pilgrimage to the annual Burningman festival after partaking a half-dozen times, I've missed it with all my heart and soul: As an adult guy in his 60s, I can honestly say that Burningman continues to be one of those genuine rites of passages and a primal experience celebrating the very best of humanity and creativity. And Jennifer Raiser has made it easier for me not to venture forth into the Black Rock Desert Wilderness by bringing to me her masterful, gorgeous, phenomenal, magnificent and rich color photographs of Burningman to me! That's the second best thing to actually being there! And without the dust! For anyone who has never been but wishes to experience the visual essence of Burningman - this book is a must have! For those of us who have been to Black Rock City but have missed being there in recent years -- Raiser's achievement will help lessen the pain of not returning! She's nailed it!

Exquisite! From the Experienced Eye.

Having been to Burning Man for 19 years, this publication embodies the poetry of both the art and the emotion of this extrordinary event. Burning Man is a transformative experience, the only international city of peace, art, music, and personal expression in the world!
Reproducing the beautifully done photographs across both pages, captures the scale of the art within the vast background of the Playa.
And so importantly, the words of the artists who endure the extreme elements, spend all their money, and enlist all their friends to produce this fantasy world that could exist nowhere else. This book comes as close to being there as you will ever find in print. And for me, a blessed reminder of the wonder and magic I have experienced through the years.

best Flash book for intermediate level

I have a total of 8 Flash books, 6 from friendsofed, two from Macromedia. This one from MM, Super Samurai, is actually the best in teaching me intermediate level Flash. For learning the basic principles of 3D, and using Flash with database, the relevant chapters in Super Samurai beat other books in my possession by miles. The explanations are clear and detailed, and the examples work. I especially love the shopping cart example used to demonstrate how to link Flash to a database using XML and ASP.
On 3D, there is simply no comparison between Super Samurai's chapter and Flash 5 Studio's chapter. Super Samurai's is easy to understand and detailed, while Flash 5 Studio just give you a few examples without much explanation. I wonder if the author of F5S really understands the examples. Even the 3D example in Flash MX Designers ActionScript Reference by Friendsofed looks muddled when compared with SS's. I have learned so much from this one book.
Strangely, when I looked for other books by the author of the chapter on XML, Michael Grundvig, the only other book that he co-wrote on this topic got a really lousy review. It just shows that publishers can give quite inconsistent quality books even with the same authors.

Somewhat helpful, overall a waste of pulp...

This book is hit and miss. Some chapters provide very useful information and reference, such as the physics modeling, while others seem to act as filler material. The subject XML and Flash, for example, can easily be found in greater depth on the net. Other chapters provide somewhat useful examples, but certainly not worth the paper they were printed on.
Another problem with this book is that most of the ActionScript is useless if you're coding with Flash MX. The chapter on using widgets, for example, is pointless, as Flash MX is now a functional OOP environment. Although the examples in the book give a general idea of advanced ActionScript--it's really geared for Flash 5--and a great deal of Flash 5 ActionScript has been replaced (depreciated).
Becuase the book is also from different authors, the writing is a bit hit and miss as well. One chapter, "Flash Interface Design", fills pages of code and screenshots, but fails to reveal the logic behind the code, or exactly how the code works at all. Instead, I'm left to hunt through the flash file on my own, and that's something I don't need a book for.
I think this has been a very popular book in the past, but with the release of Flash MX as well as the overall lack of effort on the authors part to make this more digestable, I would not recommend purchasing this book--borrow it if you need to.

VERY Advanced AS.

After going through the chapters, I must say there are a few things that disappoint me about this book. The book's layout and design are poor. The information is not well laid out and even though the authors are very well versed, I believe some editorial help on their writing style would have improved the books content dramatically. Understanding that each chapter is written by a different developer, the reader will see that the quality of the explanations varies.
The book has some very interesting concepts and given time and effort an intermediate/advanced flash AS programmer will understand the concepts and theory behind some of the more interesting flash movies on the net.
The authors are true samurai, so if you want to join their clan you're going to need to understand the concepts in this book. If you have your advanced math books from school, you'll want to take them out so you can review some trig and calculus theories, your going to need them.
Novice Flash developers better wait to get this book, trust in my words, you will minimally understand the theories. But if you are adventures, and think you have what it takes. Go for it.
