Beside Myself, by Constance Daley

BESIDE MYSELF "Perhaps my birthday brought on a day of reflection; today I am the only remaining witness to my entire life. That´s a very sobering thought…" In this follow-up to SKYLINE TO SHORELINE, Constance Daley produces a collection of stories that show lessons learned by the joys, pains and plain quirkiness of a lifetime with the clarity that only having been there can bring. But don’t expect an indulgence in sickly sentimentality. "Do Not Defrost" talks about the idiocy of cryonic suspension, noting that there are no testimonials available from those on their second time around, while "Making My Way Back" suggests that getting rid of the clutter of a lifetime through the miracle of eBay is the perfect way for man to end his days, "with hands falling open, wanting nothing." The title story of this collection, "Beside Myself," shows Constance becoming aware that, as the person she is now, she´s really a storehouse of memories for every moment of where she´s been and what she´s seen. The best part is her personal take on it all. I hope she continues to let us in on those times of her life.

The Dawn of Indian Music in the West, by Peter Lavezzoli

A little more than 50 years ago, in 1955, Ali AkbarKhan issued an LP called Music of India: Morning and Evening Ragas, with spoken introduction by violinist Yehudi Menuhin. Until then, Indian music was terra incognita in the West. When the same album was reissued as a CD in 1995, under the title Then and Now,it was nominated for a Grammy.

In the last 50 years, there has been the explosive influence of Indian music and culture in the West. Words such as karma, yoga, raga, nirvana, all once unknown here, have entered the language. Most famously, the wonders of the Indian musical world were spread by George Harrison and the Beatles. The music also had a profound effect on Mickey Hart and the Grateful Dead, John McLaughlin (Mahavishnu Orchestra), the Byrds, John Coltrane, and many others. The annus mirabilis 1967 saw the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi spreading the wonders of transcendental meditation, Swami Prabhupada founding the International Society for Krishna Consciousness in New York City, and the growing influence of Ravi Shankar. Four years later, George Harrison organized the groundbreaking Concert for Bangladesh, the first charity event of rock. Shankar had already wowed audiences at the Monterey Pop Festival, and he achieved stardom at the Madison Square Garden event. (Where Westerners, new to the sounds they heard, applauded after the musicians had finished tuning their instruments!)

Peter Lavezzoli, a Buddhist and a musician, has a rare ability to articulate the personal feeling of music, and at the same time narrate a history. Lavezzoli has interviewed more than a score of musicians, such as Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, David Crosby, Philip Glass, Zakir Hussain, Mickey Hart, Zubin Mehta, and John McLaughlin.

"Peter Lavezzoli'sstudy is a gloriously detailed explanation of Hindustani classical music...Ittakes some education for untrained ears to learn how to listen to Indianclassical music, and Lavezzoli does a great job of explaining concepts likeraga and tala.... the music is dissected with scholarly precision while thecosmic implication are also investigated thoroughly."- Brian J. Bowe, harpmagazine.com, September/ October2006

'One of the book's strengths is that it embraces the whole footprint of Indian music...Lavezzoli is sure-footed in his discussions of music theory and practice, and the interviews with key figures, reproduced...in conversation format are useful resources...This book does fill a noticeable gap on the shelves of university and public libraries for serious Indian music enthusiasts.'Oliver Craske, Times Higher Education Supplement, 27th October 2006 (Oliver Craske Times Educational Supplement)

'Lavezzoli... presents an excellent overview of the style of Hindustani, or North Indian, classical music. He presents minutely detailed transcriptions of his interviews, all with insightful commentary, of the principal Indian and Western musicians who have been the prime movers behind the presentation and appreciation of Indian music in the West. Almost a reference book in its dense coverage, this book is nevertheless highly readable and entertaining... Summing Up: Highly recommended.- CHOICE February 2007

'[a] compendious and fascinating book...It is impossible to do justice to the scope of Lavezzoli's findings in a short review: suffice to say that whether you want to know exactly how the John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain's Shakti came about, or to follow the Ravi Shankar-Frank Zappa-Peter Gabriel trail, everything you need to know is here in abundance.' ~ Michael Church, Songlines (Michael Church)

'Lavezzoli's focus is sharp, primarily Americentric and, without a shadow of a doubt, the finest treatment of what most of Jazzwise's readers would understand by dawn in the context...The heart of the book is a series of marvellous, illuminating Q&A interviews...The only real problem I had with this book was continually going back and re-reading sections instead of reviewing it. High, high praise indeed.'~ Ken Hunt, Jazzwise, Feb 07 (Ken Hunt)

"With the publication of Peter Lavezzoli's detailed and focused account of the impact of the Indian subcontinent's music on non-Indian, specifically the West's music, readers finally have a work that complements Gerry Farrell's Indian Music and the West (1997)... one of the best music books
By Aaron Joy
Just want to say - wonderful. If you love indian music and are fascinated how it came to the west this is a must read. I'm a music critic and musician and read a lot of history books. This is one of the best.

Ironically, back in high school I had an idea of a book identical to this. I even put together a contents page and some notes which mirrors this. So, when I saw it a couple years ago I went 'what!?' There's a few things he left out I would have included. The use of Indian music by performers such as Boy George, Guru Guru, Cro-Mags, Kula Shaker, Madonna and new western instruments like the sitar-guitar or guitars with sympathetic strings. But, its a minor addition and really often those musicians and others treat Indian music as an accessory and not as one's full on art. He's looking at artists moving indian music forward, both westerners and Indians, not just throwing a sitar line into a song to make it sound cool. And, he's looking at more than a band that just chants Hare Krishna but is digging into the musical spectrum as well. My interest was more in how its been reinterpetted. But, I have to say I never would have done as good a job as this.

Considering he goes from Ravi (ironically the whole idea we have of indian music today is not even a century old, and before Ravi the tabla was a non-spotlight instrument, so 'purists' have nothing to say in this conversation) to the Byrds to Oregon to John & Alice I learned so much and have discovered a lot of things I didn't know. I still don't understand always how to count the 'one, two, three' in a tala, let alone find it, or where the alap starts or jor begins, but this is NOT a technical manual. Actually, I haven't even heard many of the musicians in here yet never was lost or overwhelmed. This is a story, not a textbook. It's about people and ideas and innovations, not for musicians only.

But, it is dense. It took me a long time to read. You can't zip through it. Each chapter is a different person with DETAILED history and interviews by the author. The interviews are highly extensive, though I was suprised by how short the chapter was on John McLaughlin, who I love and that Santana only got a mention. Certainly the influence of Shakti deserves more. But, I get the feeling the author isn't so tied into modern rock music.

Highly recommended if you have a more than casual love of Indian music and how its migrated across the ocean and developed.

Brilliant, Historic, Edifying, Comprehensive, Necessary
By Dr. Debra Jan Bibel
I shall add little to the other reviewers of this extraordinarily fine account of the history of Indian (particularly North Indian) music and how it was introduced to Western ears and influenced modern popular and classical musics. I will instead say that having myself lived that history--being exposed in 1955 to the first LP recording of Indian Music and watched Ali Akbar Khan on CBS Sunday's Omnibus, having been among the first to purchase the World Pacific and Prestige recordings of Indian musicians, having attended numerous concerts of Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan, Bismillah Khan, Jasraj, Shivkumar Sharma and other Indian masters, and having become a Friend of the Ali Akbar College of Music, where I met John Handy, Terry Riley, and Ravi Shankar, as well as having followed the influences and explorations of Indian modes and rhythms in classical music and rock as a Bay Area academic hippie--I can attest that this book is amazingly well researched, comprehensive, and gets it right. Indeed, through the many insightful interviews, we go well beyond the mechanics and structures of musical infusion across cultures into the realm of spirit, humanistic motivation, and metaphysics. For instance, Mickey Hart's interview expands and details his own previous accounts of his and the Grateful Dead's musical transformation by interactions with Shankar Ghosh, Alla Rakha, and Zakir Hussain (a two-way street for the latter). Other useful interviews are with (from the classical world) Philip Glass, Zubin Mehta, Terry Riley; (from the Indian tradition) Ali Akbar Khan, Zakir Hussain, Anoushka Shankar, Tanmoy Bose, George Ruckert, Shubhenra Rao; (from jazz and rock) David Crosby, John McLaughlin, Cheb i Sabbah. But the interviews are only spice to the meat of the text, which explains the uniqueness and detail format of Indian music, supported by a glossary, and the origins and construction of the various instruments. When our world is plagued by fear and misunderstanding of other cultures, music arrives as a source for common ground. This book demonstrates its power and its promise.

How the West Woke Up
By Steve Silberman
Peter Lavezzoli's "The Dawn of Indian Music in the West: Bhairavi" is a superbly written, astonishingly comprehensive, and deeply important book. Not only is it a must-read for anyone interested in how classical Indian musical forms were embraced by Western audiences -- laying the groundwork for the proliferation of so-called world beat and other fusions -- but it's also essential reading for anyone interested in how Western musical forms like jazz and rock and roll evolved into the complex, elegant, and risk-taking journeys of discovery that they are now, in the post-Byrds and post-Beatles age.

This book is crammed with fascinating anecdotes about and probing interviews of the musicians whose own creativity was transformed by their exposure to Indian music, and the result is a book that provides one of the deepest examinations of the global revolution in music over the past four decades. The careers of pop stars like the Byrds' Roger McGuinn and David Crosby are shown in a new light; the breathtaking evolutions of John Coltrane and the Beatles are analyzed in ways that are completely fresh; and such nearly forgotten geniuses and innovators as Collin Walcott and Nadia Boulanger are finally given their due.

I had done quite a bit of reading in these areas before stumbling across Lavezzoli's book in a bookstore, but every time I pick up this book, I learn something new about music I've loved for years, from Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" to Walcott's "Cloud Dance" to Coltrane's "A Love Supreme." Lavezzoli's prose style is top-drawer -- conversational and obviously passionate about its subject, yet also highly learned and insightfully critical -- which makes the book a real pleasure to read.

One of the finest books of the year, and one of the best music books I've read in a decade.

When a high school boy skipping class to sketch shoe designs and a taciturn woman drinking a morning beer meet in a Tokyo park, they say little, but the woman bids farewell with an ancient tanka poem. This Manga Struck Me Like 'A Clap of Thunder...'
By Kevin
This manga brings one of Makoto Shinkai's latest and most beautful masterpieces into a brand new form. While the character designs may look different from what you may have seen in his film but the designs and illustrations done by Midori Motohashi fit perfect into the manga's own work. One great thing about the manga is how it is able to go more in depth to the film as if the viewer is discovering deleted scenes never before put into the movie. On one note some of the wording and placement might seem a bit off at first even for those who are experience in reading manga, but once you get used to this fresh style of manga writing you are in for a ride. The ending of the story also has cute mini-comic that I liked and thought was a nice touch. I truly enjoyed reading this manga and was able to feel it come to life as I continued to read which made it feel all as much as real to me. This one is truly a title worth being in any manga fan's collection!

Creates a poetic mood of inspiration
By Johanna Draper Carlson
A boy in his first year of high school takes shelter on days when it rains in a park gazebo. He sketches shoes and dreams of being a designer of ladies' footwear. His family is moving apart without him, with his mother spending her time with a younger boyfriend and his big brother moving in with his girlfriend.

On those mornings when he goes to the park, he has company -- an older woman playing hooky from work who drinks beer and eats chocolate in the shelter. They strike up a conversation, and he finds himself able to share things with her no one else in his life wants to hear. She seems intrigued by someone who's still got future choices ahead of him, as a way of escaping her own worries.

Either that description intrigues you, or you're thinking, "and? what do they DO?" If the latter better fits you, I don't think this is the story for you, because I found the appeal of The Garden of Words to be in its creation of mood. The events it portrays are necessarily transitory, with its pages capturing life-changing moments bound to end. The two, mismatched as they are, find inspiration in each other temporarily. I found myself thinking about people I'd barely known who still had an influence on my life, about being open to interactions with other people, about how memories become connected to places and moments and elements like the weather.

The one thing that occasionally marred my entering into the poetic dream was the lettering. It's computerized, and there are times when the words don't fit the original balloons, bumping up against the edges or parsed into breaks that don't match English phrasing. It doesn't aim for elegance the same way the other elements of the book do.

The Garden of Words is a lovely stand-alone story that I suspect one can come to at different times in one's life and find different sympathies and resonances. It's a good read whether or not you've seen the anime. (Review originally posted at ComicsWorthReading.com.)

A great story
By Amazon Customer
I really liked this manga, this story is simple and short, but I really recommend watching the anime first before reading, the music and animation make you care about the characters, and the manga really brings back the emotion you feel upon first viewing, and made the reading better in my opinion.

Review

"This is an excellent and comprehensive book for researchers in medical devices, for students who want to get early exposure to safety and efficacy issues, and for marketing/sales personnel who need to know the various institutions that approve regulatory matters for market accessibility."
―Swee-Hin Teoh, PhD, BEng (1st Hon.), Professor in Bioengineering, Nanyang Technology University, Singapore

"While much has been written about US and European medical device regulations, the Asian regulatory picture has remained clouded for most people. This book is an excellent reference for understanding what is required to bring medical devices to market under the many different regulatory systems in this important region. It is a useful tool as companies and innovators are increasingly looking to Asia as not only a new market for existing products but a launching pad for new technologies."
―Mark Holmes, Terumo BCT, Inc., USA

"This is a very interesting book for biomedical engineering students and medical engineers and an important reference for regulatory affairs professionals. The chapters on quality management systems, such as ISO 13485 and ISO 14971, clinical trial guidelines, medical device classification guide, and the formation of the Asian Harmonization Working Party are well written in plain language."
―Dr. Kwok-kwan Chan, Hospital Authority, Hong Kong, Chairman in Biomedical Division (2012–13), Hong Kong Institution of Engineers

"[It] provides extensive information about the medical device regulatory environment in Asia and the Middle East. In addition to overviews of 16 countries, it discusses medical device classification, ISO 13485 and ISO 14971 quality standards, affordable access, medical device harmonization initiatives in Asia, and other topics of both regional and global interest. The second half of the book reviews the regulatory systems for the following countries: Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, UAE and Vietnam."
―Norman M. Goldfarb, Managing Director, First Clinical Research in Journal of Clinical Research Best Practices

The Medieval World: Volume 1 (History of Costume and Fashion), by Philip Steele

A History of Fashion and Costume is an eight-volume set that examines the development of costume and fashion over time - from the earliest cave dwellers to the present - along with the social history that gave rise to it. Introducing readers to the rich world of fashion and dress, this set vividly depicts the changing styles, processes, and trends - from the first people to wear clothes in the last Ice Age to the courtly fashion of medieval Europe to the globalization of Western style - that led us to the clothing of today. Describing both the practical uses of clothing and the highly impractical clothes that have been used throughout history to convey social status, these volumes provide a compelling look at the effects of fashion and costume on society. Each accessible volume describes the fashions of the time, styles and designs, and the changing use of materials. Beautiful illustrations and engaging text examine clothing as well as the jewelry, hairstyles, hats, and footwear that accompanied the fashions and made them unique. Special features in each volume include a foreword written by a fashion industry expert as well as a helpful glossary, timeline, and index.

Nice book
By M. Higgins
This book provides a nice overview of medieval times, concentrating on knights and castles. It is full of color illustrations and pictures such as cut-away drawings of castles, town markets, the castle kitchen, and fashions of noblemen. Every other page has a full-page or nearly full-page illustration of some sort. The pages are also jam-packed with text explaining the little details that make history engaging. This would be a wonderful supplement for a study of the middle ages.

Chapters include:

The Age of Chivalry

Fortress Homes

Castle Life

Ready for Battle

Very informative and surprisingly entertaining
By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson
This large and attractive book is an excellent introduction into the medieval world of knights and castles. The book is divided into five chapters. Chapter one is entitled The Age of Chivalry discusses medieval times, and how knighthood fitted in. The second chapter, Fortress Homes, discusses how castles were built and how they worked. Chapter three, Castle Life, is all about the daily life of the castle dwellers. In chapter four, Ready For Battle, we learn about medieval warfare and weapons. And finally, in chapter five, End of an Age, we learn about the end of the world of the knights, about other knights in history, and about how the medieval world lives on in tales of chivalry.

But, what makes this book so great is that it is literally chockfull with many excellent and brightly colored pictured and exploded diagrams. They really do an excellent job of bringing medieval times to life. (I especially liked the pages on medieval fashion!)

This is a great book, one that I found to be very informative, and surprisingly entertaining. Its many bright pictures are excellently drawn, and deserve an award all on their own. I really enjoyed this book, and highly recommend it to anyone interesting in the medieval world!

Great book for elementary school age kid
By ClioStarr
My son used this book as the basis for a research project on a person who changed the world. The book is written at a level that 3rd grade and above can handle on their own. It has pictures and lots of info about Shigeru. Also, if you are using it for a report there are lots of resources for more information listed in the back of the book. The only drawback, the book ends in 2007 or so. Lots has happened in the gaming world since then so the story is not exactly up to date. Also, some of the websites listed in the book are no longer in service. But I would recommend this book to other parents for their kids.

Good book, but very basic
By S. A. Padgett
My son loved the book and read it in 45 minutes. We were a bit disappointed that the level of this book was a bit below our expectations. I would estimate that it is geared to a 4th grade reading level. Overall it was expensive for what was delivered, but any kid fascinated with video games (espeically Mario) will eat this up.

As with all workable techniques and technologies, there are the pioneers who are the masters and then there are the interpreters of the masters that come later plus the "new thinkers" who attempt to show that they know the way. Les Dane was a pioneer and a terrific sales person, training and speaker. His book Big League Sales Closing Techniques is about the skills needed by every sincere salesman if he desires truly to enter the Big Leagues. There's some one hundred or more techniques for removing the "Brick Overcoat" of resistance to the sale, a term which Les Dane coined and no one since has really improved upon.
