Really good purchase

I was extremly impressed with this book when it arrived. Really good value for money and jam packed with quality reproductions of classic art works. I didn't know about the Maeght Family when I bought the book and it turned out to be a really interesting education. Definitely recommended.

mellow family portrait of sly art dealer

Met zijn instinct voor kunst zorgde Aimé Maeght en zijn galeries in Parijs en Barcelona ervoor dat werk van Bracque, Giacometti, Miró, Matisse, Calder en Chagall in belangrijke particuliere en museumverzamelingen kwamen.
Daarbij liet de kunsthandelaar in het zuid-Franse St Paul de Vence de prachtige Fondation Maeght, een privé-museum met zijn collectie, bouwen.
Kleindochter Yoyo Maeght geeft in een lijvig fotoboek vooral een beeld van de dynastie waartoe zij behoort. Inhoudelijk laat ze echter vrijwel niets los over haar grootvader en diens vaak bikkelharde manier van kunst-zakendoen.

Over hoe je de naam Maeght uit Hazebrouck, Frans Vlaanderen uitspreekt, bestaan verschillende opvattingen, "Maagd" is uiteraard correct maar in de Franse dagelijkse praktijk lijkt "mèkt" meer voor de hand te liggen.
Er bestond overigens een (minieme) kans dat Aimé Maeght (1906-81) een Nederlandse kunsthandelaar van wereldformaat zou zijn geworden. Als gevolg van de Eerste Wereldoorlog in 1915 vluchtten zijn moeder en haar vier kinderen namelijk naar ons land. Vader Maeght, werkzaam bij het spoor verdween eerder bij eerdere oorlogshandelingen in 1914. Een jaar later werd het ouderlijk het huis plat-gebombardeerd. Een jaar later bracht het Rode Kruis het gezin Maeght naar de Cévennes.
Met het heerlijk in een Meditterane zon gekoesterde privémuseum Fondation Maeght, dat in 1964 opent, lijkt de geliefde (=Aimé) zich te revancheren op zijn onrustige vroege jeugd en het latere verlies van zijn tweede zoon.
Aimé's ontwikkeling tot kunsthandelaar en maecenas is echter vooral aan zijn zuid-Franse vrouw Marguerite Devaye te danken. Het paar trouwt in 1928.
Aimé is dan affichedrukker; een vak dat hem altijd blijft boeien en inspireert tot de prachtig gelithografeerde edities en het fameuze kunstenaarscahier `Derrière le Miroir', dat bij iedere galerie-expositie zal verschijnen. Marguerite opent in 1936 in Cannes een winkeltje waar zij luxe huishoudelijke voorwerpen en radio's verkoopt. Door zijn affichedrukkerij ontmoet hij de post-impressionistische schilder Pierre Bonnard, die ooit zelf litho's drukte. Bonnard complimenteert Maeght met zijn drukwerk en raakt met hem bevriend. Aimé wordt tussen 1939 en 1940 vanwege de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Toulon gemobiliseerd bij de infanterie maar keert na de Franse capitulatie terug naar huis. Marguerite stelt haar winkel ondertussen steeds vaker open voor exposities van lokale kunstenaars. Door hun vriendschap met de plaatselijke politicus en galeriehouder Jean Moulin in Nice krijgen de Maeghts interesse in de meer professionele kant van de kunsthandel. Als Moulin vanwege zijn verzetsdaden in 1943 wordt opgepakt en geëxecuteerd wordt verhuizen Moulins secretaris en de Maeghts veiligheidshalve naar Vence.
Doordat Maeghts familie in etenswaren handelt lijdt men zowel fysiek als financieel geen gebrek.
Bonnard stelt hen voor aan zijn vriend Henri Matisse die kort daarop een serie portretten van Marguerite maakt. In 1944 vraagt hij Aimé hem te vergezellen naar zijn Parijse atelier waar hij sinds zijn verhuizing naar Le Cannet niet meer komt. In parijs haakt Bonnard Maeght over om de Schoeller Galerie over te nemen. De oorlog heeft de Franse kunsthandel volledig lamgelegd. Als Maeght in oktober 1945 aan de Rue du Téhéran in Parijs zijn eerste galerie opent neemt hij een enorme voorsprong op zijn vooroorlogse collega's.

Aimé's eerste expositie is er een met nieuw werk van Matisse. Deze laat zich in de regel vertegenwoordigen door zijn zoon Pierre, zes jaar ouder dan Aimé.
Pierre Matisse vestigde zich rond Kerst 1925 in New York waar hij zijn kunsthandel opzette en werk van veel Franse kunstenaars aan de nieuwe Amerikaanse musea en privé-verzamelaars wist te verkopen. Het is begrijpelijk dat Pierre als handelaar met de oudste rechten wantrouwig naar de nieuwkomer Maeght kijkt. Welbeschouwd worden ze gezworen concurrenten al maken ze dat nooit publiekelijk. Ook Yoyo Maeght zwijgt in haar boek daarover.
Maar in de brievenbiografie `Matisse, Father & Son' citeert John Russell een brief uit 1945 waarin Henri Pierre voor Maeght waarschuwt: "Vergeet niet dat hij wel eens je toekomstige vijand zou kunnen zijn."
Uiteraard bezoekt Pierre zijn vaders expositie bij Maeght met beelden, tekeningen, schilderijen en zelfs foto's die het scheppingsproces tonen. Hij vindt de tentoonstelling goed ingericht, maar van de entourage gruwt hij. Zijn vader schrijft hij: "Het lijkt wel een boudoir, een wachtkamer van een dokter die indruk wil maken op zijn rijke patiënten en maakt niet de indruk van een serieuze kunsthandel.
Ze denken dat ze het goed doen maar bereiken door die poenigheid juist het tegenovergestelde." Per kerende post valt Matisse zijn zoon bij: "Aimé Maeghts opvatting van elegantie is ronduit ridicuul."
In 1947 exposeert Maeght zijn enige avantgardistische expositie: een shockerende, surrealistische installatie van Joan Miró en Marcel Duchamp met een geblindeerde naakte vrouw. Marguerite Maeght kan er wel om lachen.
Anders dan de introverte Pierre Matisse is Maeght een levensgenieter en een man van het grote gebaar. In de jaren zestig wanneer zijn handel op haar hoogtepunt is fêteert Maeght zijn kunstenaars bijvoorbeeld op diners en logeerpartijen in zijn buitenhuis in St Paul de Vence en rijdt hij ze persoonlijk in zijn Rolls-Royce naar de Biennale van Venetië. Maar ook waagt Maeght zich aan nog niet gearriveerde kunstenaars zoals de Nederlandse broers Geer en Bram van Velde. Hun expositie in 1948 verkoopt slecht. Maeght beëindigt het contract maar koopt wel klein werk van Bram van Velde aan. In 1960 is het tij gekeerd en doen zowel de directeur van het Van Abbe Museum, Edy de Wilde en Willem Sandberg van het Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam verwoede pogingen om bij Maeght een schilderij van Bram van Velde te kopen. De onderhandelingen mislukken. Beide gemeentemusea vinden de vraagprijs te hoog.

Het aanstellen van een directeur voor de lopende zaken in de galerie in Parijs geeft Aimé meer armslag voor de kunsthandel en het maken van buitenlandse reizen. In 1952 bezoekt Sandberg Maeght om een vroege Miró, `Hirondelle, amour' te kopen. Het doek moet zo'n 8000 euro kosten; te duur vindt Sandberg.
Pas na een Miró-expositie in het Stedelijk (1956) koopt hij negen, dan recente kleurenlitho's en een surrrealistische assemblage uit 1931 - voor zo'n 1200 euro - aan. Maeght schoot vaak onder Pierre Matisses duiven. Zo stelde hij alles in het werk om het wereldwijde alleenrecht op Giacometti te bemachtigen. Stokend in de lange vriendschap tussen de beeldhouwer en Matisse loog hij dat Giacometti hem al benaderde voor een expositie in zijn Parijse galerie. In 1953 op werkbezoek in New York verkoopt Maeght een nieuw beeldje van Giacometti door aan een Amerikaanse kunsthandel en schendt zo Matisses exclusiviteitsrechten.
Giacometti geeft daarop aan Matisse toe onnadenkend te hebben gehandeld en verbreekt later alle banden met Maeght.
Op vergelijkbare manieren pakt Maeght Miró en Chagall in: kunstenaars die Matisse dan al sinds hun armoedige, prille begin had vertegenwoordigd.
In dat opzicht bekijk je de Fondation Maeght anders. Met het op Amerikaanse leest geschoeide privé-museum, ontworpen door de Catalaanse architect Josep Luis Sert, die ook Miró's studio op Majorca bouwde, wil Maeght zich niet als handelaar maar als beschermer van de kunsten profileren. Hij nodigt dichters als Jacques Prévert en Louis Aragon. Giacometti maakt voor de binnenplaats een beeldenserie, Georges Bracque decoreert een "visvijver". De gewichtige Andé Malraux, president De Gaulles rechterhand en cultuurpaus opent in 1964 de Fondation. Bij het feest treden Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald en Yves Montand voor de gasten op. Rondom een beeld van Miró wordt een artistiek ballet gedanst.

Aimé heeft twee zonen. Bernard, de jongste overleed op zijn 12e.
De oudste zoon, Adrien Maeght is minder extravert dan zijn vader. In 1956 begint hij voor zichzelf een nog steeds bestaande Parijse galerie onder zijn naam aan de Rue du Bac 42. In 1974 opende de familie in Barcelona, naast het Museo Picasso, nog een Spaanse galerie. Miró kan nu ook in eigen land exposeren.
Als Maeght Éditeurs vervaardigt de familie in eigen drukkerswerkplaats hoogwaardige grafiekedities. De door dichters geschreven kunstenaarscahiers `Derrière le Miroir' zijn vaak voorzien van een -op metaal in hoge oplagen- gedrukte kleurenlitho. De cahiers zijn op veilingen inmiddels hoog gewaarde verzamelobjecten.
Reizend door de VS legt Aimé onvermoeid nieuwe contacten met een jongere generatie kunstenaars. Colourfieldpainter Elsworth Kelly maar ook de New Yorker-illustrator Saul Steinberg komen bij Maeght exposeren. De Ier Francis Bacon maakt zijn Franse debuut bij Maeght in Parijs.
In haar fotoboek geeft Yoyo Maeght een liefdevol beeld zien van haar grootvader Aimé. Ook te zien is hoe zijn passie voor de kunst gepaard ging met een hoge dosis ijdeltuiterij. Het leverde Frankrijk evenwel een prachtig museum op. Het type kunst dat de huidige generatie Maeght brengt is te kenschetsen als beschaafd-moderne salonschilderkunst. Interessanter is dat Yoyo en haar zus Isabelle Maeght, dochters van Adrien, de archieven van de familie ontsluiten. Hun vader Adrien maakte al op jonge leeftijd foto's en super 8 films in de ateliers van de Maeght-kunstenaars. Een erg mooi privé-filmpje was verleden jaar nog in het Cobra Museum te zien: Alexander Calder voert, al mompelend, met zijn geknutselde fabeldieren een circusvoorstelling voor de meisjes Maeght op.
Als je zo'n heerlijke met kunst doordrenkte jeugd hebt gehad, vergeet je gauw de minder aangename kanten van je geliefde grootvader.

About the Author
Kenneth Lonergan is the author of "This Is Our Youth," selected as one of "Time"'s ten best plays of 1998. In addition he was nominated for a Drama Desk Best Play Award and received "Encore" magazine's Taking Off Award. "The Waverly Gallery" was nominated for the John Gassner Playwriting Award. His screenwriting credits include "Analyze This," "The Lost Army." His film "You Can Count on Me," which he wrote and directed, shared the Sundance 2000 Grand Jury prize and won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award.

Thoroughly enjoyed this!

I read this as an exercise. I borrowed it from the NYPL along with the movie to ready first the script, then watch the movie. This script is full of intriguing plot twists and fully developed characters. I appreciate the moments when poetry is read aloud :) and I look forward to seeing how the women's issue scenes were directed and acted for the screen. Now I'm off to watch the film and work out. You, my fellow lit-lover or writer or student, should spend a few hours reading this script! It's a good one.

Some Good Moments

Lonergan's "You Can Count on Me" remains one of my all-time favorite movies, so I was eagerly anticipating Margaret. In my view, however, it's something of a let-down. There are some good scenes, Anna Paquin and J. Smith-Cameron (Lonergan's wife) are very good. The film is intelligent and it feels like real life. But, somehow the story never came together for me. I watched both the longer cut and the shorter version and preferred the shorter.

About the Author
Abi Aghayere, PhD, PEng, is a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering Technology at Rochester Institute of Technology and the coauthor of Reinforced Concrete Design, Sixth Edition. He is a member of the Editorial Board of ASEE's Journal of Engineering Technology and the winner of RIT's Eisenhart Award for Outstanding Teaching, 2004–2005. He has over seventeen years of diverse experience in the design of building structures of different types and materials.

Jason Vigil, PE, is a structural engineer in Rochester, New York, who has been involved in the design of several buildings including many wood structures. He is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Civil Engineering Technology at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Wiley makes your read hard

I'll tell you that the subject of this workmanlike text is outside my domain, but in skimming the book for information I needed, I found that Wiley has allowed the graphics yahoos into book design: your use of the book will be made harder -- to no good purpose -- by using in the book a font somewhat on the light side, and somewhat on the small side, and then setting all examples against a screen (gray background) that is on the heavy side. The result is many pages -- several to dozens at a crack -- of clarifying examples that are both uninviting and slower to work through than were they set on white paper stock.

Bless you if you have great eyes and always have good light!

For the rest of us, an older copy of Donald Breyer's commonly available text, "Design of Wood Structures," if it covers what you need, is refreshingly accessible: readable black on white, and examples set off only by something as mundane (how dated!) as a rule.

Again: if this does not impede your use, good. Me... I'd like to hand Wiley's book designer a pair of greasy eyeglasses, and have him or her work through the examples. Ah, they don't do the math? Well, read the text aloud to another party at Wiley, until they are moved to tears, and change their ways. ;-)

Frederick Douglass recalled that slaves living along Chesapeake Bay longingly viewed sailing ships as "freedom’s swift-winged angels." In 1813 those angels appeared in the bay as British warships coming to punish the Americans for declaring war on the empire. Over many nights, hundreds of slaves paddled out to the warships seeking protection for their families from the ravages of slavery. The runaways pressured the British admirals into becoming liberators. As guides, pilots, sailors, and marines, the former slaves used their intimate knowledge of the countryside to transform the war. They enabled the British to escalate their onshore attacks and to capture and burn Washington, D.C. Tidewater masters had long dreaded their slaves as "an internal enemy." By mobilizing that enemy, the war ignited the deepest fears of Chesapeake slaveholders. It also alienated Virginians from a national government that had neglected their defense. Instead they turned south, their interests aligning more and more with their section. In 1820 Thomas Jefferson observed of sectionalism: "Like a firebell in the night [it] awakened and filled me with terror. I considered it at once the knell of the union." The notes of alarm in Jefferson's comment speak of the fear aroused by the recent crisis over slavery in his home state. His vision of a cataclysm to come proved prescient. Jefferson's startling observation registered a turn in the nation’s course, a pivot from the national purpose of the founding toward the threat of disunion. Drawn from new sources, Alan Taylor's riveting narrative re-creates the events that inspired black Virginians, haunted slaveholders, and set the nation on a new and dangerous course. 35 illustrations; 4 maps

Escape from slavery in the antebellum South evokes images of secretive flight on the Underground Railroad or bizarre efforts like that of “Box Brown,” who hid in a small shipping crate sent north. Taylor, a Pulitzer Prize–winning historian, teaches at the University of California, Davis. In this revealing and engrossing study, he illustrates that a great factor in the liberation of thousands of slaves was the policy and intervention of the British government and military. Taylor concentrates on the six decades between the American Revolution and the slave revolt of Nat Turner, and he focuses on the Chesapeake region of Virginia. The area is dotted with numerous rivers flowing to the bay, and here hundreds of slaves paddled out to British warships, especially during the War of 1812. British naval officers, through a combination of military practicality and, in some cases, antislavery sentiments, encouraged and facilitated their flight. This, of course, served to reinforce the slaveholders to view their slaves as “internal enemies.” This is a well-written and scrupulously researched examination of an important aspect of the struggle against American slavery. --Jay Freeman

Outstanding!

Alan Taylor is an exceptional story teller. This is a meticulously researched, beautifully written account of the little-known details in the nation's history of the crucial role that Black Virginians played in the War of 1812. Around this theme, with Taylor's wonderfully detailed and precise writing style, he creates an intricate tapestry of historical facts and events that bring to life a vital picture of the conflicted political atmosphere of Virginia and beyond, the day to day operations of the powerful leaders, and the intertwining of their lives with the status and existence of their slaves. The book was mesmerizing and I couldn't put it down.

Milestones along the Way to the Civil War

As the author explains, "the internal enemy" was a phrase used by some Americans to speak of slaves, especially during times of war. In states like Virginia, with its many thousands of slaves, free people used this expression to speak of slave rebellion and sabotage, or at least their potential. The phrase could refer to runaways who took refuge with, provided information to, and sometimes even fought for the external enemy, the British.

The chronological bookends of the subtitle, 1772 and 1832, are significant. The first date refers to the Somerset decision in Great Britain, a legal ruling which had the effect of threatening the future of slavery in the British American colonies and thereby hastening the American Revolution (pp. 19-23). Following the uniquely-bloody slave rebellion of 1831 led by Nat Turner, in 1832 Thomas Jefferson Randolph, a grandson of Thomas Jefferson, introduced to the Virginia legislature a plan for the gradual abolition of slavery. Taylor suggests that the vote against that plan was a milestone in the road that led to the Civil War (pp. 414-17). Yet, almost all of the book focuses on 1812-15, the years of the War of 1812. During that war, it was common for slaves, especially from the Tidewater region of Virginia, to escape to British warships in the Chesapeake Bay.

In this book, Taylor is intent on showing that as the American Revolution heated up, events in Virginia were just as significant as better-known events in Massachusetts. He also wants to show that the activities of rebellious slaves made the War of 1812 significantly worse for Virginians, and for the American republic in general. For example, unlike British troops, slaves knew the terrain and hideouts on land. So they were able to serve as knowledgeable guides for the British in enemy territory. I don't know that he ever explicitly says it, but it seems Taylor at least implies that, really, "the internal enemy" was a phrase that most aptly described not slaves, but slavery itself.

Something else: Taylor implicitly confronts the notion that the War of 1812 resulted in almost nothing but good things for the new nation: National sovereignty was reinforced. The Battle of New Orleans became a celebrated event. Westward expansion took off in a new "era of good feelings." What Taylor suggests, however, is that the war left the American South even more invested in slavery. Therefore, this was the deepening of U.S. sectionalism.

Although he clearly knows and sometimes cites the secondary literature on his topic, as he tells this story Taylor routinely quotes primary sources. Overall? This book is a masterful achievement. It tells a number of fascinating stories while covering an important subject.

This brilliantly researched history tells the true story of the War of 1812, and the heroism of former enslaved men. African Americans in the thousandsliberated themselves, and worked to liberate their families and friends through military service as Colonial Marines in the British services. The book also shows the lengths to which American slavers and leaders sought to malign the heroism of those marines and the honour of the British who fulfilled their commitments as liberators after the war.

learned quite a handful...

I have always loved the Spanish language and I have always wanted to learn it. Reading some books had helped, but coming across this one is a different experience. I was able to learn quite a handful here. With all the 101 easy to learn phrases, this book rocks. I think it has been researched well and the book was put together with much care too. The phrases are those anyone would need in a daily basis when in a Spanish speaking country. Yes, this book is quite a purchase.

Robbins' transition novel is an entertaining read

79 Park Avenue is the fast moving tale of Marja Flood who rises from poverty in Depression era New York City to become the mob backed successful madame in post WWII NYC. The novel is a transition work for Harold Robbins who in his early works focused on the struggles of growing up in Depression NYC to later on dealing more overtly with sexual themes with characters that are composites of famous individuals. In 79 Park Avenue, one character, Ross, can be seen as being based, in part, on famous mobster and founder of Las Vegas, Bugsy Siegel. Story is fast moving and you can't put the book down until it's done. While the story doesn't have the emotional depth and impact as his previous novel, A Stone for Danny Fisher, 79 Park Avenue is one entertaining read and a fine way to close what the author would later call his "Depression in New York Trilogy".

About the Author

Gary Paul Green is a professor in the Department of Community & Environmental Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a community development specialist in the Center for Community & Economic Development at the University of Wisconsin-Extension. Green’s teaching and research interests are primarily in the areas of community and economic development. In addition to his work in the U.S., he has been involved in community and economic development research and teaching in China, New Zealand, South Korea, Uganda, and Ukraine.

Anna L. Haines, Ph.D. is a professor in the College of Natural Resources at the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point and a land use and community development specialist with the University of Wisconsin-Extension. Haines received her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin - Madison in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. Her research and teaching focuses on planning and community development from a natural resources or environmental perspective. Her research has focused on evaluating community planning and zoning in terms of smart growth and sustainability, land parcelization, and local food systems. Her extension work has focused on comprehensive planning and planning implementation tools and techniques, sustainable communities, and property rights issues.

About the Author

Cedric Gondro is Associate Professor of computational genetics at the University of New England. He has extensive experience in analysis of livestock projects using data from various genomic platforms. His main research interests are in the development of computational methods for optimization of biological problems; statistical and functional analysis methods for high throughput genomic data (expression arrays, SNP chips, sequence data); estimation of population genetic parameters using genome-wide data; and simulation of biological systems.
