Not for the masses

If one can read through the author's interminablly sophomoric and condescending attitude(s); perhaps a nuggest or two of knowledge can be gleaned by those who can perservere. The commercial reviews are terribly outdated. This book is for those who have unlimited funding for building exotic telescopes and accessories. I cannot recommend this book and wish I had not read it so I could return it for a refund.

A great referance for the advance amateur covering the history and methods ( applied and theoretical ) of astrophotography. A definite must for all amateur astronomers that photograph the sky.

About the Author

Tero Karvinen teaches Linux and embedded systems in Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences, where his work has also included curriculum development and research in wireless networking. He previously worked as a CEO of a small advertisement agency. Tero's education includes a Masters of Science in Economics.

Kimmo Karvinen works as a CEO in a leading company specialized in AV automation in Finland. Before that, he worked as CTO for a hardware manufacturer that specializes in smart building technology, as a marketing communications project leader, and as a creative director and partner in advertisement agency. Kimmo's education includes a Masters of Art and he's currently working toward his D.Sc. at Helsinki University of Technology.

Ville Valtokari works as the head programmer for automation hardware manufacturer. Before that he designed and programmed cutting edge AV systems. Countless personal projects include game design and programming, building robots, and discovering how things work.

Sensors for Dummies

This primer bridges both worlds of Arduino and Raspberry Pi with excellent attention to details for the uninitiated. If you need proven solutions AND willing to fork some $$$ for the sensors you will achieve a sense of satisfaction in quickly reproducing the abundant examples in the book.

The more I use the book to evaluate the exercises, the more I am impressed by the attention to detail by the authors. Of course, there will always be opportunities to explain things in more detail for diverse audiences but I have to confess that most of the discrepancies I am capturing below may be due to "operator error!" :)

I will append editorial oversights below as I dutifully step through each chapter [be warned: this is not my day job :)]
Figure 1-7 does not match Table 1-1
Example 3-5 assumes that the on-board LED (pin #13) is used in Figure 3-10
Example 3-4 invokes "botbook_gpio.py" which failed compilation in my IDLE 3 environment (I corrected the print statements) at line 25, column 20 for the "wa" dual attribute. Apparently one attribute is allowed in my configuration. Not knowing enough about the low level details, I changed the setting to a single attribute but ran into "timeout" problems with the pulseInHigh(echoPin) method. Perhaps an example of the "operator error" I alluded to earlier.

√ Whoa! One Excellent Book!

I thought this book would just cover interface circuits. What I got instead was a far more complete, detailed manual about many important features of both the Arduino and Pi. For my "Geocaching" hobby, we use Arduino to build self-contained "Geocaches" in the San Francisco Bay Area, so I am familiar with some of the input circuits of that device, such as keyboards, LED's, etc. It was fun to see all the different sensors that can be used. Great ideas to try-out!

The book divides the sensors into the following categories:
Distance
Smoke/Gas
Touch
Movement
Light
Acceleration
Identity
Electricity

Each section has a good general overview of what you are trying to measure, and the math involved. Then, a sample sensor is introduced, with detailed instructions on how to hook it up. Tips on where to find the datasheets, along with URL's are included.

The sections on setting up Arduino and the one on Raspberry Pi are outstanding. Detailed, clear instructions on how to hook-up, download software, and get your first "Hello World" program off the ground. Includes links to websites that have the free OS or utilities.

I appreciate the information about all the extra cables, etc., that are required to get either device up and running. The low cost can be deceiving, since all the interface circuitry and cables can really add-up.

√ VERY IMPRESSIVE BOOK. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

(I see that the publisher's HQ is not too far away; we'll have to place some Arduino-based geocachers right next to MakerMedia HQ.)

For those of you wondering what to do with that Raspberry Pi sitting in your desk drawer (the one you were once so excited about when it first arrived?), well wonder no more. Put that processor (and your brain) to work building electronic devices to interface it with! This book will show you how. It isn't for the technophobe, or the plug-n-play set (who on earth would think that?). By the same token, it isn't an esoteric techno-tome either: it is a well-written, keenly and cleanly explained guide to getting started. Your personal tricorder awaits its development! Plenty of explanation is provided for the Linux noob. The beauty of this book is in its ability to catch and hold one's interest: there are dozens of projects requiring a wide range of ambition (notice I didn't use the word 'expertise'), each contributing to the store of knowledge you'll acquire in the use of the Pi, in computing and in electronics. This is properly a hands-on book. I'm a teacher researching curriculum for my students, and the title sums up my view. They will eat this up like Kibbles and Bits. Score!

War is Hell

This is the second book that I have read that is written by Ernie Pyle. My comments pretty much remain the same. He spends the majority of the book in dealing with his conversations with the soldiers who fought the battles. In this book, he discusses his conversations with the soldiers by their job specialties (Infantry, Artillery, Aviation etc) and further breaks the discussions down by unit designation. It was a great idea to read about these discussions because I can relate to them as a retired veteran of 22 yrs (USA). He points out that besides getting shot at and possibly killed, that there were other aspects of the war that were not brought out in movies such as the fear and barbarism that combat can bring out in man. A veteran who has humped the ruck and slept in the mud of a foxhole can relate to these events. His comments on D Day + 2 can bring flashbacks to a vet who has seen death and the chaos that combat can create. Its not like those John Wayne/Chuck Norris movies with all the glory. He hits home and the manner in which he describes the battles he experienced are evidence that war is hell. In peace time, a son buries his father and in war time a father buries his son. Its sad to imagine how many of these veterans who returned home and had to endure the flash backs and post traumatic stresses of these horrific events.

How can one "rate" the greatest war journalist who ever lived?

How can anything written by Ernie Pyle rate anything but five stars? How could I possibly "rate" Ernie Pyle? The best compliment one could give to a war journalist is, "He's almost as good as Ernie Pyle." Bill Mauldin and Ernie Pyle, the last truly great war writers and commentators.
If you are even remotely interested in the heroes who saved the world from totalitarianism this is a must read and should be in your permanent library.

About the Author

Mark Hammond is an independent Microsoft Windows consultant working out of Melbourne, Australia. He studied computer science at the South Australian Institute of Technology (now the University of South Australia), and then worked with several large financial institutions in Australia. He started his consulting operation in 1995. Mark has produced many of the Windows extensions for Python, including PythonWin, Active Scripting, and Active Debugging support, and coauthored the COM framework and extensions. He is also a leading authority on Active Scripting and related technologies and has spoken on this subject at Microsofts three most recent Professional Developers conferences. Apart from being a father to his teenage daughter, having an interest in live music, and providing way-too-many free Python extensions, Mark has no life!

Andy Robinson is a London-based consultant specializing in business analysis, object-oriented design, and Windows development. He studied physics and philosophy, then Japanese studies at Oxford. He spent a year in advertising in Tokyo, two more in investment banking, and a long spell as the finance director of a startup in the sports industry. Observing that in all these positions he always ended up having to rewrite software, he moved to full-time computer consulting four years ago. He is currently helping one of the world's largest fund managers to internationalize their systems to handle Asian languages, developing Python systems for financial analysis, and reporting. Back when Andy had spare time, his passions were track and field, and rock climbing. Right now his two sons, Tim and Harry, are taking up all of his time.

Be careful

This book was written in 2000. There's not a problem working with the examples if you're using python 2.7.x. However, the book opens up with a pretty heavy intro to business finances accompanied by a class library that you need to download and make work on your system. There's about 6 chapters of this before you learn that you need to know VB. I looked into learning VB, and apparently VB is generally deemed obsolete and not even installed on windows 8? No thank you.

This book is cool if you're pretty heavy into python programming and you know some other languages as well. This book is not cool if you have beginning to intermediate level python skills.

An oldie but goodie.

A good way to get Python to 'do stuff' in a Win32 environment. I've found it most useful for dealing with people who utilize an exclusively Windows environment. Mostly, I've just taken my programs that others 'need' information from and quickly tacked on a printed report or updated spreadsheet that they can use. I don't know about writing whole programs in Windows, but it was more than adequate at helping me bridge the gaps I needed bridged. I presume the book to be pretty dated, but nothing I used was so out-of-date as to be non-functional.

Dated but Still Very Pertinent

For me the most valuable part of the book was Chapter 5 where it explains how to create COM objects using Python scripts. I always knew that I could do this, but I was never quite sure how. The example worked perfectly with Python 2.6 and got me up and running in no time. By doing this I can easily share my functions and classes with my coworkers who only use VBA.

If you are using Python to automate any of the Microsoft Office Applications, I highly reccomend it.

Got me around Eastern Europe for a month

This book worked great for those situations where I was in the country side and jut needed to get across a few words though.

Important Note: Eastern Estonian is different from what is spoken in Tallinn and is closer to Russian. The locals can get a bit pissed if you speak traditional Estonian (which is all that's covered in this book) to them in Narva.

Close, but could be better

Add it to your collection, however, it has it's shortcomings. The author is defintly knowledgeable about his subject, however the presentation of the material could be better. The book reads like a compilation of magazine articles at times. If you have a good collection of VW Trends & Hot VW's magazines, you probably don't need this book. The author is also from the UK, so there are references to items, that if you are in the USA, may not be practical (i.e. brakes from a Horizon Talbot or something like that). He presents alot of options on various topics, but never really tells you what product "in reality" is the best (pros/cons). He also does not really get into true suspension tuning. Things are left pretty loose (i.e. adding an anti-sway bar will improve handling)....Well, as a race driver myself I could disagree with this statement in certain cases. He does not outline, basic vehicle dynamics tunings. Example: He does not say that Stiffening the rear of the car increases oversteer, and stiffing the front increases understeer. Let alone define under/over steer. The affect of tire pressures, alignment, etc. These TRUELY "tuning for High-Performance" items are either left out or glossed over.
Unless, you need a good reference on Brake "Options", or how to shorten you chasis for kit cars or Baja's, spend your money on "Keith Seume's book on Volkswagen Bug Performance". If you already own Keith's Performance book, you probably don't need this book.
Stongest Point: R&Ring King and Link Pins, Ball Joints, basic maintenance on the supspension.
If the book were titles "VW Suspension Maintenence and Options" I would have rated it a 4. The "high performance" angle despite the many brake options is misleading.

This is a dense subject, and those familiar with Nepo’s style of writing will be glad that he revisits the familiar format of the short, intense chapter followed by meditation points and questions for reflection. A Transmission of Lyrical Truth

I love Mark as a person and writer. I love his poetry and his true humble heart. This book is so magnificent. It feels like a direct transmission of mystery when you read it. I have felt healed, expanded, and inspired reading it. I love that it goes into more width than The Book of Awakening - longer pieces, more flexible structure. My copy is underlined and dog eared, and will stay by my side for a long time. A keeper you will want to buy!

Being unfamiliar with the author's style of writing, I was pleasantly surprised to see methods for achieving deeper listening. Each section has a reflective pause with practical ways to apply the simple truths in your own life, independently or with others.
