About the Author
Abi Aghayere, PhD, PEng, is a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering Technology at Rochester Institute of Technology and the coauthor of Reinforced Concrete Design, Sixth Edition. He is a member of the Editorial Board of ASEE's Journal of Engineering Technology and the winner of RIT's Eisenhart Award for Outstanding Teaching, 2004–2005. He has over seventeen years of diverse experience in the design of building structures of different types and materials.
Jason Vigil, PE, is a structural engineer in Rochester, New York, who has been involved in the design of several buildings including many wood structures. He is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Civil Engineering Technology at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Wiley makes your read hard

I'll tell you that the subject of this workmanlike text is outside my domain, but in skimming the book for information I needed, I found that Wiley has allowed the graphics yahoos into book design: your use of the book will be made harder -- to no good purpose -- by using in the book a font somewhat on the light side, and somewhat on the small side, and then setting all examples against a screen (gray background) that is on the heavy side. The result is many pages -- several to dozens at a crack -- of clarifying examples that are both uninviting and slower to work through than were they set on white paper stock.
Bless you if you have great eyes and always have good light!
For the rest of us, an older copy of Donald Breyer's commonly available text, "Design of Wood Structures," if it covers what you need, is refreshingly accessible: readable black on white, and examples set off only by something as mundane (how dated!) as a rule.
Again: if this does not impede your use, good. Me... I'd like to hand Wiley's book designer a pair of greasy eyeglasses, and have him or her work through the examples. Ah, they don't do the math? Well, read the text aloud to another party at Wiley, until they are moved to tears, and change their ways. ;-)
