No Limitations on Shakespeare's Imitations

As an open partisan of Mark Taylor's scholarhip, I was delighted to find that he has outdone himself in SHAKESPEARE'S IMITATIONS. His prose sparkles with a bravura wit truly inspired by the verbal and structural play of Shakespeare's own invention. SHAKESPEARE IMITATIONS tackles the best of the best: A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, HENRY IV, PART 1, HAMLET, and THE TEMPEST. With great yet unassuming erudition and with an unflagging perceptiveness, Taylor pursues the kaleidoscopic question of Shakespeare's mirrorings of antiquity, of contemporary literature, and of his own creations. Even on the rare occasions when I find myself disagreeing with him, Taylor's arguments compel a re-thinking of these four great plays and a renewed appreciation of the infinite capacity of Shakespeare's (to say nothing of Taylor's) imagination.

Although the theoretical background is French and thus somewhat elliptical in expression, Taylor's prose is fresh, clear, and a pleasure to read. Difficult matter gracefully communicated.

What makes doing the specific integrals in this book of value aren’t the specific answers we’ll obtain, but rather the methods we’ll use in obtaining those answers; methods you can use for evaluating the integrals you will encounter in the future.

This book is written in a light-hearted manner for students who have completed the first year of college or high school AP calculus, and have just a bit of exposure to the concept of a differential equation. Every result is fully derived. If you are fascinated by definite integrals, then this is a book for you.

About the Author

Paul Nahin was born in California, and did all of his schooling there (Brea-Olinda High 1958, Stanford BS 1962, Caltech MS 1963 and - as a Howard Hughes Staff Doctoral Fellow - UC/Irvine PhD 1972, with all degrees in electrical engineering). He has taught at Harvey Mudd College, the Naval Postgraduate School and the Universities of New Hampshire (where he is now emeritus professor of electrical engineering) and Virginia.

Prof. Nahin has published a couple of dozen short science fiction stories in ANALOG, OMNI and TWILIGHT ZONE magazines, and has written 14 books on mathematics and physics. He has given invited talks on mathematics at Bowdoin College, the Claremont Graduate School, the University of Tennessee and Caltech, has appeared on National Public Radio's "Science Friday" show (discussing time travel) as well as on New Hampshire Public Radio's "The Front Porch" show (discussing imaginary numbers) and advised Boston's WGBH Public Television's "Nova" program on the script for their time travel episode. He gave the invited Sampson Lectures for 2011 in Mathematics at Bates College (Lewiston, Maine).

Book is a "Must Have" for scientists and engineers

This book is very unusual. It reads like a novel but every engineer and researcher should consider having it at arm's reach. The coverage of integrals is not that of a mathematician but that of a person calculating in the trenches. Rigor is not the focus but wide coverage and great utility is. Riemann and Lebesgue integrals are both defined, but the latter is quickly dismissed as not being important to his readers.
Nahin treats almost all of the areas of science and engineering where integrals arise. The book can easily be used a reference by jumping in at a topic one needs to work on now. In a short time the reader is able to be functional in an analysis at hand. Every step of each method is shown. There are Challenge Problems at the end of every chapter with solutions in the back of the book.
Mathematical niceties such as convergence, singularities, and interchange of integration order are noted but set aside until the end of each method. Then numerical check cases are calculated in Matlab to determine if there has been a problem along the way. The reader can of use Mathematica or Wolfram Alpha if that is suitable.
This book is not littered with gratuitous pictures of mathematicians with a brief caption. Instead there are copious references that discuss how early practitioners solved an integral and comparisons of different approaches. The contributions of GH Hardy and Richard Feynman occur throughout the book.
Knowledge of complex arithmetic and basic calculus are assumed at the beginning. At the next to last chapter Contour Integration is covered with a theoretical introduction.

A wonderfully unique book on integrals

Nahin's book on integrals is certainly not the only book aimed for undergraduates and devoted to integration. It is, however, unique in its down-to-earth, applied treatment of integration. Other texts of comparable levels of mathematical sophistication tend to be oriented towards transitioning students from the rote, mechanical treatment of calculus problems to the deeper understanding acquired in courses on real analysis. For this reason, they invariably spend a fair amount of time on topics like measure theory, the Lebesgue integral, rigor (both in presentation and exercises), and similar content that greatly benefits the undergraduate majoring in mathematics but is of little or no use to engineers, computer scientists, and others who intend to go on to more applied fields. Nor his Nahin's book simply a more thorough treatment of methods to find antiderivatives, of numerical integration, or in general the kind of extended nature of most books on integration that are intended for non-mathematics majors.

Instead, it is an exquisitely idiosyncratic presentation of integration that provides a both deeper understanding while remaining thoroughly applied in orientation and a way, or set of ways, to problem-solving that is not at all an extension of methods learned in typical calculus courses. In short, it provides a look inside integrals- as promised.

Great Leaps is a Great Read

This is such a joy of a book, written with deep humility and earnest curiosity. Flahive exudes great compassion and humor in this breezy and enjoyable memoir which puts a human face on the story of modern China and its people's growing pains and pleasures. As an intrepid expat who set up a highly unusual coffeehouse there, Flahive is able to provide an absolutely fascinating perspective, and one which is at the same time uniquely intimate.

I loved reading about this American's travels and adventures. This is a side of China you probably won't ever see, because Colin and his friends go deep into the heart of China. It's face-paced and absorbing. Enjoy!

Great book!

I got absorbed by the book since the first chapter, and finished it in just a few days. It includes very interesting and accurate stories about life(style) in rural China and about young girls and boys from the countryside moving to the cities, anecdotes about the opening and managing of Salvador’s Coffee House - a second home for most of the foreigners living in Kunming - by Colin Flahive himself together with his partners, the stories of great projects started by Colin and that are still carried on… all this mixed with various personal experiences (some pretty scary!!!), and everything enriched with personal views, feelings and thoughts. It’s an interesting and instructive overlook of the China that is not usually represented, plus it’s an adventurous journey in the life of a young guy in China. It’s really really worth it! Sara

About the Author
Thomas K. Holcomb is Professor of Deaf Studies at Ohlone College in Fremont, California, where he teaches both Deaf and hearing students in courses on Deaf culture, Deaf education, and A.S.L./English Interpretation. Holcomb's family -- his parents, grandparents, children, and grandson -- are all Deaf. With over 30 years of teaching experience, as well as several publications, training packages, and D.V.D.s to his name, Holcomb is considered a leading authority on Deaf culture. He has presented in 45 states and several different countries, including Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Japan, and Sweden. His academic credentials include a bachelor's degree from Gallaudet University, a master's degree from Rochester Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. from the University of Rochester.

Hooray for Introduction to American Deaf Culture!

I am writing this review as a second year Communication Sciences and Disorders major with an emphasis in education and Deaf studies. I am currently enrolled in a class entitled Orientation to Deafness and this book, Introduction to American Deaf Culture written by Thomas K. Holcomb, is the primary text used for the class. It has been a refreshing addition to the many monotonous textbooks I have been collecting as it's 15 chapters are thoughtfully written and give an honest depiction of Deaf culture along with it's stereotypes, language, art, and literature to name a few.

As a professor of Deaf culture classes for 30 years, Holcomb includes anecdotes from his personal life and experiences as a Deaf individual as well as the experiences of his students, children, and colleagues, providing an understandable and comprehensive guide to American Deaf Culture. This book is a great choice as a textbook to provide the basic knowledge you need to begin learning about Deaf culture. He uses pictures, charts, and graphs throughout the book in order to provide better understanding and my personal favorite aspect is the how he uses a poem written by a Deaf person to conclude each chapter. They are thought provoking and give the reader an opportunity to connect with the content in an alternative and interesting way.

I use Introduction to American Deaf Culture weekly in order to answer a number of discussion questions. This book not only makes it much less painful to complete the assignments but it makes me truly want to learn more about Deaf culture and its community. I write this as a person who not only actually enjoys a required text but as a person who would recommend this book to anyone who might be taking, or considering taking, an ASL course. I would be willing to say it should be required for students in ASL courses to have an understanding of the community whose languge you are learning to use. I personally am taking Beginning ASL I, using the textbook Master ASL! by Jason Zinza, and Introduction to American Deaf Culture has helped me tremendously simply by providing background knowledge on the signs and language I am learning. Required or not it is an interesting read for anyone interested in Deaf culture, it is truly fascinating and all too often overlooked. I have already learned so much!

Overall, I give this book 5 stars based on its interesting qualities and readability. I recommend it, as well as Deaf studies in general, to everyone!

Fascinating, detailed, and written in an easy format. You can skip around in this book without feeling lost in the information, he always cites his own chapters when he brings up something from a previous or future chapter so you can look it up. Good for basic concepts. Many mistakes, incorrect answers, and poor explanations. Be prepared to be confused and frustrated!

This is a decent text for introduction to anesthesia concepts. As a CA-1, it's one of the only useful question resources for anesthesia basic knowledge. HOWEVER, there are MANY MANY errors in the books which makes it VERY frustrating when doing the questions. The errors aren't necessarily in the content, but MANY times the answers do NOT address the original question. It just discusses a topic related to the question which leaves you wondering what the actual explanation is. Some answers say C but the explanation describes A as the correct answer.

For instance, question 341 asks for the greatest to least anesthetic requirements between adults, neonates, and infants. The answer explains that sevo is different from all other anesthetics in this regard, and then goes on to talk about what the answer would be if it were asking about sevo in specific. But the correct answer they give IS for sevo and not for most volatile anesthetics as the question intended. See the confusion? Just one of MANY types of frustrating errors in this book.

For a question book that's on its FIFTH edition, there are a LOT of overlooked errors, outdated information, and confusing answers. I wish there were a way to contact them to inform them, but I'm sure many already have and little has been changed. Goes to show that they re-release the same text with a new edition title to make a fresh new buck.

Overall, most of the question and answers are useful for reviewing basic anesthesia concepts for CA-1's and 2's. But beware the frustration and confusion you'll encounter when using this text.

Outstanding Anesthesiology Textbook in the Question-and-Answer Format

"Anesthesia: A Comprehensive Review, Fifth Edition" is a superb textbook, and it is widely considered to be the best of the Anesthesiology textbooks written in the question-and-answer format. It provides an excellent review of the fundamental principles of the specialty of Anesthesiology, as well as thorough coverage of the subspecialty areas of Anesthesiology practice. Used in conjunction with one of the comprehensive textbooks of Anesthesiology, this very useful question-and-answer manual serves to permanently imprint the key concepts that are an essential component of the knowledge base of every resident. A good review book. Useful for anesthesia residents preparing for intraining exam and board certification. Sadly, I paid $80 for the 4th edition of the same book, and to my disappointment about 80-90% of the questions are the SAME WORD FOR WORD from the 4th edition. Not worth the upgrade. I was expecting more

Unauthorized but worthwhile

British author Joel McIver, who’s penned books on Metallica, Black Sabbath, and Motörhead (to name but a few), has now written the unauthorized story of Robert Bartleh Cummings – known to the world as Rob Zombie. This 274 page hardcover features a foreword by Jeremy Wagner of Broken Hope, and as you would expect, begins with Zombie’s childhood. After graduating high school in Haver Hill, Massachusetts, Zombie moved to New York City and on his first day in The Big Apple, witnessed a murder. A lot is learned about the White Zombie frontman in these early pages. In fact, Zombie recalls, “When I got to NYC, I lived so far below the poverty line, because I didn’t give in and get a job at 7-Eleven.” He further adds, “You have to have almost psychotic drive, because you’re going to have years of failure.”

It did indeed take years for White Zombie to make their mark, but Rob’s band received a Grammy nomination in 1993; three years later and the group was essentially over. During these chapters, the author unfortunately goes off on tangents such as Elvis Presley, and the PMRC Hearings – which Zombie had no part of; then tries to relate it to the subject matter at hand. Discussing Zombie’s first solo album, Hellbilly Deluxe, McIver allocates a mere paragraph to the contributions of Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee – that’s a topic which should have been deeply explored. The same can be said about the guest appearances by Ozzy Osbourne and Slayer guitarist Kerry King on The Sinister Urge – both are quickly glossed over.

As movie-making enters Zombie’s realm, beginning with his 2003 horror flick House Of 1,000 Corpses, which was quickly followed by The Devil’s Rejects, McIver analyzes the rocker’s directorial efforts and camera angles. When it comes to the pair of Halloween films, the author unnecessarily recounts the storyline pretty much scene for scene. Comparing music to movies, Zombie admits, “It really is like two different halves of my brain,” later going on to say, “You have to keep challenging yourself to try and do different things.” Ultimately, McIver paints Rob Zombie as a man of serious dedication and discipline, who functions in his own bubble most of the time. Illuminating Read

The first thing that strikes the eye is the vivid crimson cover-a fitting iconic imagery of the persona that is Rob Zombie.
This illuminating biography written by Joel McIver, with an engaging forward by Jeremy Wagner, chronicles the life and times of Rob Zombie, born Robert Cummings. Focussing on the man and not necessarily the concept, the biography takes us on a tour of Zombie's brain (pun intended). We meet the slightly off-centre child, whose genius was yet to be exposed to the world and move forward through decades of impressionable work. So much more than a musician, director and cartoonist amongst others, Zombie is shown as the artist he truly is. Not just a glitzy exposé of his private life, the biography emphasises the extensive body of work and the sacrifices, hard work and good times it took to create.
Having been a fan of Zombie's for many years, I was excited to get my hands on this advance preview from Netgalley. Upon completion I felt a little ambivalent however. Maybe I expected to be entertained more. The use of 70s horror movies to label the chapters was a great idea and set up an understanding of where each chapter was heading. I enjoyed the all-encompassing view of the subject matter-that each facet of his life was touched upon and no section received special treatment. In saying that however, I felt that if the author didn't like a particular part of a section like an album or movie, that it was passed over or merely mentioned. This sometimes then turned some chapters into fleshed out lists which caused me to gloss over them. The addition of the end credits, citing all of Zombie's work was a clever move-it finished the book like a movie and tied it into the chapter headings.
Well worth the read for hardcore fans as well as those meeting Zombie for the first time. Myths about his evil lifestyle and stage presence are debunked and he is shown for the gifted and driven man that he is. An entertaining and enlightening read-homage paid by the author indeed.
