About the Author
Carol H Rounds is lecturer in Hungarian and has been teaching at Columbia University since 1988. Previous titles include Hungarian:An Essential Grammar, another in the Routledge language series.
Erika Sólyom, an NYU graduate, is a sociolinguist and she has been teaching Hungarian as a Foreign Language at Eotvos Lorand University and Corvinus University of Budapest. She is also the director of the American Corner Budapest at Corvinus.

The Best Available Resource

Perhaps the best thing about Colloquial Hungarian, what sets it apart from other available resources, is that it makes learning Hungarian--a task that, at first, feels like climbing mount improbable--approachable and fun. I am a second-year Hungarian student who this summer had the opportunity to study in Budapest with Erika Solyom. Before finding the book (and Professor Solyom), I bounced through a variety of materials: an old US State Department coursebook, a few grammars, a Teach Yourself course, and an audio course from Pimmsler. Everything I tried seemed to be missing something fundamental. The grammars excluded, all the more pedagogically-oriented materials I tried were either too analytic, grounded in a rote militaristic logic of drills and tiring repetition, or too soft, focused only on building the capacity to speak at a basic, I-just-landed-and-can-greet-the-customs-officer level. I'm not saying these materials weren't helpful. They were, each in their own way. But none succeeded in bringing together so seamlessly all the requisite components of language learning as Colloquial Hungarian. For me, finding the book changed everything.
Suddenly, learning Hungarian not only seemed attainable, it was fun. The book's bedrock is a story, unfolded through dialogues (available on CD and excellent) and centered in the lives of a handful of colorful characters that, I admit, I grew quite attached to. I think this is something unique in a language-learning book. Is it corny, funny, cute? Maybe so. But it works wonderfully to get you more invested in the material; at least it did for me. The grammar unfolds in a manageable, brick-by-brick way, and it encourages you to focus on one thing at a time, to seek out patterns, and to build and build at a slow pace that assures you won't get burned out, feel hopeless, or give up altogether.
Learning Hungarian is already hard. Why make it harder? If you want a book that empowers you as a language learner, that leaves you feeling like you can do this, like you ARE doing this, buy Colloquial Hungarian. Believe me, I've tried many others, and this is hands down the best.

Brings an impossible language within reach.

I studied from Erika Solyom's book while studying in Budapest, Hungary. For me, learning the Hungarian language seemed to be a very intimidating task, but Colloquial Hungarian made the process much easier, even fun. The characters, dialogues, cultural items and poetry included in the book expose the reader to Hungarian culture which helped me have a deeper understanding of the Hungarian lanuage. I strongly recommend this book.

Great Starter

The first two things everybody asked me when I told them I was going to be studying in Budapest for a semester were "Wait, are you going to actually LEARN Hungarian?" and "Isn't that one of the hardest languages ever?"
After taking the class for just one semester and having the opportunity to learn from this book in particular, I can say that it was a lot easier than I imagined. As Markus said, each new section builds on the last, which really helps to solifidy your base knowledge with each new unit. While I would change the order just slightly (putting things like numbers closer to the beginning), I can definitely say that without this book (and the great instruction that went along with it), I would have been lost for the entire semester. Unlike other books I've seen for the language, this one actually shows you the logic behind a lot of the grammar - something that comes in handy when you encounter a new word. At only half-way through the book, you begin to be able to distinguish what parts of speech foreign words belong to and even be able to somewhat discern what the basic idea of the text is.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone trying to learn Hungarian.
