Interesting But Annoyingly Dated

The book is built around the election of a Russian Pope and then describes his trials and tribulations. The book was written in the early 1960s and may have seemed bold at the time, but subsequent true-life Vatican history has been more intriguing, thus rendering this book kinda tame. So, I found myself reading it mainly for the description of how a pope goes about his days. There's not much of a plot here. There is a lot of Catholic theology and emotional stress, but it's not the kind of book that will keep you up till 3 in the morning (although I just finished it -- at 3 in the morning!) West is an excellent writer and hardly a page goes by when I am not impressed by his command of the language and his insight into papal thought. So, as I say, it was interesting, but annoyingly dated.

The Shoes of the Fisherman

One of my favourite books! I had read it not long after it was published in the 1960s and I decided I wanted to read it again (but had long ago given my copy away. I bought a secondhand copy from Amazon and it is just as relevant today as it was then. The main reason I wanted to re-read it was because of the newly elected Pope being Russian - he seems to have some of the qualities of the pope in this book and I hope he has the same attitude to the wealth of the Catholic church. Highly recommended

Thoughts of a Pope

A prescient book about the future Popes, evidently published the day John XXIII died.
Prescient in that John Paul 1 evidently wanted to give much of the Churches wealth to help the poor and John Paul II was from Eastern Europe (Poland).
Interesting extracts from the Pope's 'diary' where he writes his personal thoughts about wanting to make his mark on the Vatican and the world.
I was a bit disappointed in the end where it was rather left hanging without a final climactic action but overall an excellent read.
The film of the book had a better finale but was only loosely based on the book (inspired by?).The Shoes of the Fisherman

A fantastic, simple explanation of the important financial planning aspects that we should all be looking at. Finding out at age 60 that you should have done things differently is too late. Meeting with a qualified financial advisor is important, but YOU still have to take ownership of your decisions. 95% of people cannot afford to retire and continue with the same standard of living - the book guides you through that.

It is estimated that one in three New York City residents is an immigrant. No other American city has a population composed of so many different nationalities. Of these "foreign born," a relatively small percentage come directly from Ireland, but the Irish presence in the city―and America―is ubiquitous. In the 1990 census, Irish ancestry was claimed by over half a million New Yorkers and by 44 million nationwide. The Irish presence in popular American culture has also been highly visible.

Yet for all the attention given to Irish Americans, surprisingly little has been said about post–World War II immigrants. Almeida’s research takes important steps toward understanding modern Irish immigration. Comparing 1950s Irish immigrants with the "New Irish" of the 1980s, Almeida provides insights into the evolution of the Irish American identity and addresses the role of the United States and Ireland in shaping it.

She finds, among other things, that social and economic progress in Ireland has heightened expectations for Irish immigrants. But at the same time they face greater challenges in gaining legal residence, a situation that has led the New Irish to reject many organizations that long supported previous generations of Irish immigrants in favor of new ones better-suited to their needs.

Linda Dowling Almeida, Adjunct Professor of History at New York University, has published articles on the "New Irish" in America and is a longtime member of the New York Irish History Roundtable. She also edited Volume 8 of the journal New York Irish History.

"Most histories of New York City's Irish immigrants focus on the plight of the men and women who fled the potato famine in the mid, 19th century. However, a recent US census recorded over half a million persons of Irish ancestry living in NYC; historians know very little about this generation of Irish immigrants. In an effort to address this overlooked aspect of the city's history, Almeida (New York Univ.) explores the Catholic Irish immigrants who made their way to the city in the 1950s and 1980s. She surveys the experiences and expectations of midcentury immigrants and examines why the New Irish were forced to adapt their expectations and institutions to meet the social and cultural demands of life in New York City. Based on 52 interviews with Irish immigrants and material drawn from the US census, this is a solid piece of scholarship. Almeida undermines notions that the city's Irish community is a homogeneous entity, while demonstrating that probing the forces that mold Irish identity is a rewarding exercise. About the Author

Linda Dowling Almeida is an Adjunct Professor of History at New York University. She received her BA and MA degrees from Boston College and her Ph.D. from NYU. She has published articles on the "New Irish" in America. She is a long-time member of the New York Irish History Roundtable and edited Volume 8 of the journal NEW YORK IRISH HISTORY.

Bloom is Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at University of Florida and David Camerini is Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at the University of California Irvine.

Excellent resource

I used this textbook as a required course reading in undergrad, and expected it to either sit on my shelf forever.

Now, in med school taking virology and immunology, this textbook is a fantastic, accurate, up-to-date (as much as any science textbook) resource that I've come back to time and time again.

Quality book, well worth the money if you need a good basic virology resource.

TERRIBLE TEXTBOOK (MUST READ)

Took this course at my university, by far this has to be one of the worst written biology books out there. Everything is all over the place, the figures are alright but the text is written in bullet point paragraphs!
