About the Author

Eric J. Simon is an associate professor of biology at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to both science majors and non-science majors, as well as upper-level courses in genetics, microbiology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly for non-science majors. Eric is the lead author of the introductory biology textbooks "Essential Biology" and "Essential Biology with Physiology" and is a co-author on "Biology: Concepts and Connections."

 

Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in biology from Harvard University (where she was initially a philosophy major), an M.S. in microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). She is the lead author of Biology, Eighth Edition, and Biology: Concepts & Connections, Sixth Edition.

 

Jean L. Dickey is a professor of biology at Clemson University. She had no idea that science was interesting until her senior year in high school, when a scheduling problem landed her in advanced biology. Abandoning plans to study English or foreign languages, she enrolled in Kent State University as a biology major. After receiving her B.S. in biology, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Purdue University. Since joining the faculty at Clemson in 1984, Dr. Dickey has specialized in teaching non-science majors, including a course designed for pre-service elementary teachers and workshops for in-service teachers. She also developed an investigative laboratory curriculum for general biology. Dr. Dickey is the author of Laboratory Investigations for Biology, Second Edition, and is a coauthor of Biology: Concepts & Connections, 6th Edition.

Floppin' all over the place

Whoever thought it was a good idea to make this thick book a softcover, I tell you: it was not. The shear weight of this book, combined with the thin, slippery cover, makes it difficult to hold onto the book. Additionally, for whatever reason, whenever I put this textbook into my messenger bag (a regular messenger bag, nothing special), it always ends up bent and wedged under my other books. It's hard to even pull it out because there's no friction. I try to keep my things nice, but this book was the only one in my possession with dog ears and crinkles after merely one semester of use.

Asides from the obvious issue, this book was very informational and to the point, and it explained difficult aspects of biology in such a simple, succinct manner that I learned more from it than I did in many of my previous textbooks. I know I might be unfair if there is a hardcover available, but if there is not, this book can be a hassle. Get the hardcover.

For an introductory Biology class this is a really good supplemental study aid

For an introductory Biology class this is a really good supplemental study aid. I have a terrible lecture professor who barely skims the material, so this text has really helped me attain a better grasp of the material. It is written in very plain language, although there are some particular chapters in the book which are so densely packed with information, anyone can get bogged down by it very quickly. (Cells - omg.) Some of the chapters are short, while others are long, so don't get "used" to a certain time period that you will study for, as for me it varied between half an hour to read a chapter to almost two hours. Even more if you're going to take notes at the same time.

Anyway thank you to the writer and publisher for making this text available as a rental - it saved me so much money, and the content of the book itself is very well organized and written.

Interested in biology? This book is a good choice.

The class is over, but I'm still reading this textbook. I, a former non-biology major, have thoroughly studied units one and two. I didn't appreciate the quality of this book until I purchased other biology textbooks to further my knowledge.

This textbook is easy to understand. It builds your knowledge up from the bottom, and every matter mentioned can be understood if you apply the prior information.

So far, the only exception to the above is the lack of in-depth chemistry in unit one, Cells. It has basic visual models of molecules, but it doesn't go deep into why the chemicals interact in certain ways. Instead, it makes simple representations that convey the functions of the molecules. This is good if you don't want to learn in-depth chemistry, but I found myself wishing I knew more of the chemistry behind the reactions.
However, you might want to skip unit one because unit two, Genetics, is far more interesting. Plus, if you skip it because you didn't want to read about chemical interactions, unit two might do a better job of engendering your interest in biochemistry because you can't understand the functions of individual genes unless you know some biochemistry.

The book's orientation around building your understanding replaces the persuasive argumentation and other rubbish that lurks within other textbooks. There are no separate boxes of text meant to change your stance on controversial issues, nor are there little comics with jokes about current issues. It's just science.

Both brilliant and easy to grasp

This book has been of great significance in my coming to know God. I have given copies to probably 10 people, and the ones who have read it all say the same.
Tom Green is a gift to all communions of the Church, Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant. *Weeds Among The Wheat* shows His deep knowledge and love of God and his profound compassion for God's people on Earth.
The best thing about this book is that it keeps the back-and-forth quality of the Christian life firmly in focus: we serve a God who is power, love, and light, but we are fallen men and women, living in a fallen world with few really black-and-white choices.
Green is writing about discernment, which is the art of hearing clearly what God is saying, and then following where He leads--hence the subtitle, "Where prayer and action meet."
The very idea of a real God, outside of us, speaking to us things we can understand and know come from Him, is ridiculed by many. Excellent guide for discernment of the spirits

Started reading this book because of a series of seminars on spiritual discernment at an Ignatian centre. It's by far the most enlightening and useful book i've read on discernment.

Fr Green began by looking at three key concepts of God throughout history - disinterested watchmaker, manipulative puppeteer and loving Father of mature adults. Then, he explained six norms for distinguishing true prophets from false prophets in the Old Testament - often prophecies of something bad/unpopular (rather than something good so as to make the kings or the powers-that-be artificially happy), fulfilment through 'signs', obedience to God, deep faith consistent with earlier teachings in the bible, intention to convert people for the better (rather than to covert power or other material rewards), and an inaugural prophetic call.

Then a chapter followed on how Jesus discerned infallibly His identify and mission, as well as how his disciples discerned gropingly the person of Jesus and His mission, what the apostles Paul and John had taught about spiritual discernment in their letters to the faithful (e.g., Galatians 5:19-23 in the New Testament). Next, more details on the kind of disposition and 'climate' that a discerner needs to maintain to be truly open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, and so on.

How i wish i've read this book much earlier! Then again, if i had read this earlier, it would not make that much sense, would it?

A Fine Book....Much Food for Thought

I first began to consider the "art" of discernment at a retreat last year and purchased the book to read shortly thereafter. As we week to discover or discern God's plan for us, WEEDS AMONG THE WHEAT provides an excellent discussion of the topic in clear, articulate language. Unlike many texts, this book is highly readable whether one has actual training in theology or is relatively new to spiritual exploration. As Christians and Catholics, we are called to do God's work, not just what we think is God's work. We are called to do God's work in our daily lives in the world at large, not just during solitary times of prayer or devotion.
Father Green provides a rich source of information in developing discernment in the context of a special lifelong journey. It is an excellent introduction to the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius Loyola and to "the place where prayer and action meet."

This book has been great for my 5 year old

This book has been great for my 5 year old. We've owned it for about 6 months now. We read it pretty frequently at first, and coupled it with discussions about interrupting. The illustrations and concepts in the book were familiar for my son-- one setting is an elementary classroom, and he was in kindergarten when we got the book, so it made an impact. Now, usually all we have to do is give a gentle reminder that he just interrupted us, and my son will apologize and sit tight until it's his turn to talk.

It really helped him see how bad it was to speak out

My son has adhd, and loves this book! Her books explain things perfectly for kids to understand and absorb what's being said. It really helped him see how bad it was to speak out, but it's something others do too and he can change that. It has also helped me to make correcting his outbursts more fun and less being scolded by mom again, by saying I hear a volcano erupting. It works! A lot better than shushing. I definitely recommend this for any parent struggling with their child constantly interrupting.

Volcano mouth

It was a cute way to point out to small children about the importance of holding their tongue. I didn't however like the way it shifts blame on their mouth. I feel like it could have taught them how to take more responsibility of their actions instead of putting fault on the "volcano"

This is more than I ever expected to learn about the complexities of being a QB in the NFL. Had to read through sections a few times before it sank in. Some of the formations drawings could have been more clear, but the details are excellent. I have a whole new appreciation for the QB position.

Being an ex children's librarian, I find reluctant reader's especially boys gravitate to these non fiction books, great for sight reading, I have my kids say all the words on the page they know then we highlight them and peace them together. There are many little people boys as well as girls that greatly benefit from non fiction books geared toward them and the subjects they love.

Great, but the text is much more complex. The jump between reading levels 2 and 3 is dramatic.

We've bought a number of these to introduce our 3 year old daughter to non-fiction writing. The dolphins and sea turtles books are level 2, they're complex concepts but with mom or dad to help explain and discuss things while reading them to her its fine. This one however deals with the concept of migration, which even with mom and dad helping she just doesn't grasp. Its not the language thats the problem, but the concepts. Will be good when she's older.

Deceptively Simple

Almost every pro guitarist, and a lot of amateur ones, know the Mickey Baker books. A number of jazzers and rockers started out with them- Pete Townsend has said that he learned his chords from Mickey. This was the only specifically jazz oriented guitar method available back in the 50s when Mickey wrote it, and it's been in print pretty much continuously since then. That by itself should should tell you a lot. A lot of guitarists looking for a good jazz self-study course have looked at this book, and wondered if there was really much to be learned from few simple chord exercises and a few dozen riffs. Sure, there were a lot of good chords to be learned from it, but beyond that...?

Actually, there is a tremendous amount of information to be found in this book, but only if you follow Mickey's directions. He doesn't give you a lot of why- just "do this until you have it down." But if you do that, you'll find yourself internalizing a lot of important rules and skills that other teachers spell out. Those hokey sounding chord progressions that Mickey wants you to memorize and transpose to other keys are actually teaching you all the standard jazz substitutions. Mickey does spell out some of these rules in the second half of the book, but if you've done your homework you'll find that it's much easier to apply these rules to soloing if you've actually internalized them than if he had just told you that you could use a Lydian or Aeolian sub for a dominant chord in a 12 bar blues.

The second half of this book is all about learning to solo, and a lot of non-readers have looked at it, and been put off by the lack of tab. But you don't need reading skills beyond that absolute minimum to use this book. Mickey has provided all the fingerings below the staff for each exercise. It may be a little unfamiliar at first, but by the time you finish this book- and it'll take a year to really do it right- you'll find that you have some pretty good reading skills, too.

Even though it was written back in the 1950s, the riffs and chords Mickey teaches sound just as hip today. Some guitarists will quibble with some of Mickey's choices, or his chord names, but it's more a matter of opinion than a fault in the book. For example, a lot of contemporary guitarists would play something like Bm7-Bb7-Am7... rather than Mickey's straight descending m7ths (Bm7-Bbm7-Am7..) today, but that's something the student will learn just by listening to guitarists today.

In short, if you have some basic guitar skills- you know a few dozen chords, and you can strum along- and you're confused by all the different jazz guitar books out there- this is the one you should start with. If you follow his directions, practice every exercise until you've memorized it, and written out and practiced all the transpositions, too, by the time you finish the book you'll be able to comp and put together a simple solo over most any jazz tune.

[n.b.- this edition is the original book as printed in the 1950s. There's another edition with a blue cover that was edited and re-typeset in the 70s, but that edition contained a number of errors that were introduced in the editing. This is the one you want.]

Not for beginners, but great for novice guitarists looking to stufy jazz techniques.

I'm returning to jazz guitar study after nearly 20 years away. When I was learning, in a college focused on jazz, this was standard fare. I learned on this book. The first part of the book is focused on chord study. There are tons of great jazz chords and basic, simple, progressions to learn and apply those chords. The reader is learning how to substitute jazz chords in a very simple and repetitive way. The second part of the book is focused on scales, various runs and riffs and soloing.

There is no tablature, and I think that is best. It is in every guitarists best interest to learn how to read music. it's very easy and will only help the studying guitarist advance in the long run.

This is not an appropriate book for a complete beginner. As a guitarist who had been playing for over 10 years, but with no jazz experience, this book was challenging. 20 years later, with a rusty music degree, it's keeping me on my toes. Not impossible, and a great motivator. I'm feeling great about reinforcing my core knowledge and technique as well as refreshing forgotten ones.

If you complete this and the 2nd Baker book, you're well on your way to being able to hold your own in a jazz setting, provided you're also listening to jazz and playing along to records and with other musicians.

I feel this would be a great folllow-up to the Berklee Modern Method for Guitar books.

Excellent jazz chord primer for guitar...

I purchased this volume (and volume 2) 6 months ago or so and have been steadily working through the lessons. As for my skill, I'm an intermediate player with a solid chord vocabulary and a fair understanding of jazz harmony. Like most jazz guitar players, I want to know more. Aside from the low cost ($7.95), what most inspired me to consider these books was the "subtle" endorsement given them by Robben Ford in his "Art of Blues Solos" instructional video (which I enjoyed too). Ford stated that he worked through Mickey Baker's book when he first started playing guitar and... well, Ford is an awesome player!

Lesson 1 starts with Baker diagramming 26 chord forms and telling the reading to get familiar with them. The book does not use tab for showing chords, but the chord diagrams Baker provides are straight-forward. I suspect beginning players should want to break the chord forms down, by note, to learn which dotted fret is the root, 3rd, 5th, 7th, etc., for any given chord. The lessons that follow ask the reader to play melodies using specific groups of the 26 chords. Also, for some lessons, Baker asks the reader to transpose progressions from previous lessons into new keys and then practice playing them. As the lessons progress, Baker methodically introduces the reader to more chord forms, to single-note lines, chord vamps, progressions, and more... and more... and more. As other reviewers have pointed out, there are 52 lessons in volume 1, and so there is lots to learn.

The Baker books are simply designed for the reader to work at a comfortable yet steady pace, not become overwhelmed by discussions of theory, and to lean to play some cool sounding jazz melodies on the guitar. Beginning guitarists will likely have more difficulty but that would be due to a lack of mechanics than with anything else. With sufficient finger and chord exercises, playing troubles will diminish.

Outdated but still valuable

I have recently bought and finished reading this book. This book covers the internals of the windows 3.11 (16bit) operating system. Because windows 3.11 does not use most of today's PC technology, the ia32 architecture, protected mode kernel/application enviroment, some of the materials are really not relevant any more. However, the mechanism and the design of the windows 3.11 is still very relevant to help understand modern operating systems such as Windows NT/2000 and even Linux. Matt is an outstanding windows developer and his understanding of the windows internals still helps.

The book that made Windows programming interesting

Just adding a quick review to try and undo the effects of the individual who rated this one star. Don't buy this book to understand current (circa 2009) versions of Windows. Buy it to understand the challenges early Windows developers faced and to marvel at Matt's ingenuity as he unravels the many undocumented internals of early Windows. Yes, most of the book does not apply any more, except perhaps that Windows is still an O/S based on the concept of the Dynamic Link Library (DLL). This is a book by an early Windows developer who defended the idea that it's OK to lift up the lid and understand how your computer works. It's a battle that continues to this day between the open source community and the software industry, and this book may just inspire you to join the fight.

A hundred-star, brilliant book (yes, about a dead technology)

I got this brilliant book and read it when it came out and only post this note because I saw some genius below give it ONE star because "it's outdated". I find it outrageous when some dummkopf gives a good book one star because it's not the book he needs: somehow the author should have written about future software, like he's a seer of some sort.

_Windows Internals_ by Pietrek is a fifteen-year-old book about Windows 3.1 and it is _this_ that's outdated. The book does not mislead the reader as far as what it's about in any way. So yeah, this book will teach you nothing about XP and Vista (nor even NT); it is a book on a piece of dead technology. So you probably don't need it anymore, at least not as a direct study aid sort of thing -- except, perhaps, for this:

Technologies, especially software, do age and die very quickly today, but human intelligence doesn't! This is a fantastic book where the author uncorks Win3.1 and studies its internal workings. In a sense it still is good to read this book -- just in order to learn how this is done. You can never go wrong reading a well-written book by a brilliant author, no matter how outdated the subject matter. If you have time to spend on general learning, get this book; looks like today it can be had for pennies, so take advantage! Whether to read this book or not is only a question of having time, I believe: it's a brilliant piece of work.
