He's the recipient of an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Arkansas Arts Council, and his nonfiction has been cited as notable work in Best American Sports Writing. He lives in Montana.

A Strong Debut Collection

I really enjoyed Ben Nickol’s debut collection, Where the Wind Can Find It. While some reviewers place an emphasis on the common themes such as lying or falsity, I think a better common thread for these stories is a sudden, palpable existential doubt. Claire, the protagonist in Missing, throws herself into a search for a missing child, not because it’s her job, but because she longs for something to fill the void of normality. Leslie, the sloshed golfer in Knotted, acts more like Meursault than Tiger Woods. “I want to be what people are, which of course is what I am, what I’ve always been. I’ll do what she says, provided she does some of what I say, and maybe we’ll overlap enough to stick.” In Like Gloves of Air, the strongest story in the collection, John has an “episode” and his reality suddenly becomes unmoored. He commits acts of mindless criminality, neither joined nor separate from reality, but “absorbed in the membrane of things.” He doubts his sanity, “but even when weeks passed and nothing weighed any heavier on his mind than petunias or carrots, there persisted in him some gravity that was less knowledge than what lay under knowledge, the way living is less blood than what runs in the blood, the pulse.” At its best Where the Wind Can Find It captures that pulse. Nickol is a talent to watch.

About the Author

DAVID T. ALLEN, Reese Professor of Chemical Engineering and the Director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Resources at the University of Texas at Austin, was the 2000 recipient of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers Lawrence K. Cecil Award in Environmental Chemical Engineering for his contributions to air quality and pollution prevention engineering and environmental engineering education.

DAVID R. SHONNARD, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at Michigan Technological University, is a 1998 recipient of the NSF/Lucent Technologies Foundation Industrial Ecology Research Fellowship for research that integrates environmental impact assessment with process design. Other related awards include an NSF-funded repository for pollution prevention curriculum development materials.

Preface

Chemical processes provide a diverse array of valuable products and materials used in applications ranging from health care to transportation and food processing. Yet these same chemical processes that provide products and materials essential to modern economies also generate substantial quantities of wastes and emissions. Managing these wastes costs tens of billions of dollars each year, and as emission and treatment standards continue to become more stringent, these costs will continue to escalate. In the face of rising costs and increasingly stringent performance standards, traditional end-of-pipe approaches to waste management have become less attractive and a strategy variously known as environmentally conscious manufacturing, eco-efficient production, or pollution prevention has been gaining prominence. The basic premise of this strategy is that avoiding the generation of wastes or pollutants can often be more cost effective and better for the environment than controlling or disposing of pollutants once they are formed.

The intent of this textbook is to describe environmentally preferable or "green" approaches to the design and development of processes and products. The idea of writing this textbook was conceived in 1997 by the staff of the Chemical Engineering Branch (CEB), Economics, Exposure and Technology Division (EETD), Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT) of the US EPA. In 1997, OPPT staff found that, although there was a growing technical literature describing "green" approaches to chemical product and process design, and a growing number of university courses on the subject, there was no standard textbook on the subject area of green engineering.

So, in early 1998, OPPT initiated the Green Engineering Project with the initial goal of producing a text describing "green" design methods suitable for inclusion in the chemical engineering curriculum.

Years of work, involving extensive interaction between chemical engineering educators and EPA staff, have resulted in this text. The text presents the "green" engineering tools that have been developed for chemical processes and is intended for senior-level chemical engineering students. The text begins (Chapters 1-4) with a basic introduction to environmental issues, risk concepts, and environmental regulations. This background material identifies the types of wastes, emissions, material use, and energy use to determine the environmental performance of chemical processes and products. Once the environmental performance targets have been defined, the design of processes with superior environmental performance can begin. Chapters 5-12 describe tools for assessing and improving the environmental performance of chemical processes. The structure of the chapters revolves around a hierarchy of design, beginning with tools for evaluating environmental hazards of chemicals, continuing through unit operation and flowsheet analysis, and concluding with the economics of environmental improvement projects. The final section of the text (Chapters 13 and 14) describes tools for improving product stewardship and improving the level of integration between chemical processes and other material processing operations.

It is our hope that this text will contribute to the evolving process of environmentally conscious design.

Draft manuscripts of this text have been used in senior-level engineering elective and required courses at the University of Texas at Austin, Michigan Technological University, the University of South Carolina, and West Virginia University. It is suggested, in a typical semester, all of the material in the text is presented. Not the best book I've ever used.

I used this book for a graduate level course, "Advances in Pollution Prevention". This book is not the best book I've ever read. The end-of chapter problems are mediocre, and often insult the reader's ability, particularly as a graduate level chemical engineering student. One example that comes to mind is where the problem requests the student to "write a 2 page essay" on some topic or another. It could use a lot more "meat" - stronger use of reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, and transport phenomena. The writing is difficult to follow, and sounds like a government report (not surprising, as the authors work for the EPA).

moderately over priced text

A bit of a quandary: needed for class, but disagree with the premise that CO2 is all man caused. It is not. Even at less than 0.03 percent of the atmosphere, the oceans stabilize the concentration better than sequestration. THE text DOES introduce proper stewardship of resources by renaming the term "sustainability."

Gr 2-4–Fifth-grader Rufus's only wish is to get a dog, but his work-at-home dad objects. He lists numerous reasons, including that dogs lick people's faces, chase cars, and eat dead things. Rufus's mom brings home a guinea pig instead in an attempt to fulfill her son's desire for a pet. To his surprise, the guinea pig, which he names Fido, acts like a dog. She obeys his commands and chews his dad's shoes. When Rufus's family decides to return the animal to the pet store, a classmate is willing to buy her to replace her hamster. But Rufus begins to have second thoughts about relinquishing the guinea pig. Although no explanation is given for why Fido behaves like a dog, children will have no problem accepting the absurdity of the situation. Jennings' salute to kids who get less (and more) than they ask for offers a unique and hilarious take on boy-dog bonding. Fifth-grader Rufus begs for a dog, but because Dad says no (in an enumerated list), Mom brings home a guinea pig. Rufus is disappointed, and Dad is annoyed, but because the pet shop has vanished, they are stuck with a rodent that barks, fetches sticks, whines, and licks faces. Rufus is both embarrassed (what will his friends think?) and charmed by Fido's doglike behaviors; the scale finally tips in the pig's direction when he executes a perfect, Lassie-like rescue of his master. As he did in Faith and the Electric Dogs (1996) and more recently in We Can't All Be Rattlesnakes (2009), Jennings injects magic realism into a story filled with believable yet flawed characters, resulting in a satisfying story. Short, manageable chapters; a breezy, conversational style; and identifiable characters (the bully, the show-off, the obsessive stay-at-home dad) make this a good choice for readers making the transition to chapter books. Hilarious

This book is great fun for both the parent and the child. My son hates to read and doesn't care to be read to, but this book has changed that. He impatiently asks me to read him "Guinea Dog" each night. The school yard scene with the guinea pig chasing Rufus made us laugh so hard we had to stop and catch our breath before we could continue. We will definitely be looking for more books by Patric Jennings to read.

We can't all be golden retrievers

Right over here! Look this way! Over here! TWEET! You looking? Yeah, so right over we've got ourselves a Patrick Jennings fan. Yup. Patrick Jennings. The guy who wrote that fantastic "We Can't All Be Rattlesnakes", along with approximately a hundred other books. You've read him, right? No? Well that's fine with me. It's like when you discover this cool underground band, and you get to be their biggest fan all by yourself. It's great. You walk around with this knowledge in your head of, "I am into something incredible that only I know about." That's how it is with Patrick Jennings and me. Problem is, I keep recommending his books to the kids in my library. And if I keep this up, I may end up unexpectedly creating a whole host of Jennings fans. Then he'll get hugely popular and go mainstream and I'll have to share him with the rest of the world. After all, he's a fantastic author who writes primarily animal books (not many folks do that these days, y'know) and who's latest title "Guinea Dog" is just about the most fun you can get out of a book about a guinea pig with ambitions.

"My dream of a dog died then and there. Instead, I was the proud owner/caretaker of a plump, punk guinea sow. Like, yippee." Rufus is a pretty easy guy to figure out. He wants a dog. A dog is all his wants, in fact. His father, unfortunately, is dead set against this idea, and what Rufus's dad says goes. That is, until the day Rufus's mom brings home a guinea pig as a kind of compromise. Rufus is not impressed, nor is his dad, but this guinea pig, dubbed Fido, is hardly normal. She pants. She fetches. She plays dead on command. And ever so slowly, while dealing with some best friend issues at school, Rufus starts to see the advantages to having a pet that isn't exactly like everyone else's.

Now the dialogue in this book is nothing short of divine. Snarky kids are not easy to write. Not so as they sound like real kids anyway. And Jennings has created a particularly smart alecky type of kid. Fortunately he's old enough to believably come up with the lines put in his mouth. Some of my favorites include the moment when Fido starts making too much noise and Rufus's dad asks what the racket is. "I pointed at Fido. `Why, it's the quiet, clean pet Mom bought me'." I like that Jennings feels no need to telegraph that line by inserting an "I said sarcastically". He shows, and doesn't tell, this author. In terms of descriptions Rufus says of himself that he has, "a neck that could stop growing any time without any complaint from me." He says of his father, "That's what Dad can do to you. He can make you forget you have a chubby rat in a sack on your back." And he later mentions that since he's a better staller than a liar, "Maybe one day I'll write my own book: The Complete Dork's Guide to Hemming and Hawing."

It's interesting to see where Jennings puts his point of view in his stories. In the aforementioned "We Can't All Be Rattlesnakes" the hero of the book was Crusher, a snake. She was inclined to view the world with a particularly snakey take. "Guinea Dog", in contrast, is entirely from Rufus (the boy's) point of view. The guinea pig is left as a kind of a mysterious entity. Her thoughts are her own, hidden from human understanding. Jennings also isn't afraid of creating female animals in his books. The heroine of "We Can't All Be Rattlesnakes" was a lady snake. In this book Fido is a female guinea pig (dog). I'm sure you could make all kinds of interesting psychological interpretations of what a boy/female pet pairing really means, but all I care is that we're getting some strong girl characters in our kids' books. Even if those girls do happen to be covered in scales and fur.

The little details are what I like best of all, though. We have finally gotten to the point in children's literature where parents have jobs like editing golf online magazines from home. So that was a realistic, not to say contemporary, detail that I appreciated. I also loved that Rufus's hobby was collecting Scrabble tiles.

Not that there weren't a couple moments that didn't entirely gel with the rest of the book. For example, there was a time when I was confused about Rufus's devotion to his new pet. One minute he's dead set against having Fido adopted by a girl in his class. Next minute he's saying, "I didn't want them - especially Mom - to have any extra reasons to want to keep her [the guinea pig]." It didn't happen very often, but once in a while I was confused.

The book would actually pair bee-autifully with "Wishworks, Inc." by Stephanie Tolan. In that early chapter book too a boy wants a beautiful, strong, independent dog of his own... and ends up with an unexpected pet instead. At least you can say that Rufus got himself a better behaved breed of dog-wannabe. And since 2010 is the year for good guinea pig-related literature, you might also pair it with "Hamster and Cheese" by Colleen AF Venable. That female guinea pig has more of a bedhead hairdo, however, while Fido's hair is described as having a punk rock look.

"Guinea Dog" does not contain a big story arc, all things considered. That is fine. Not every book has to include an epic quest or enormous fights between characters. Jennings thinks that we'll be content with this tale of a boy trying to understand both his best friend and his new pet, and he's right. We really are content with that. We're content because the writing is strong, the characters a lot of fun, and the story just plain enjoyable. You don't need to be a fan of guinea pigs to enjoy this book. Heck, you don't need to be a fan of dogs either for that matter. All you need to be a fan of is fun books for kids. Books that everyone can enjoy. Consider this a great readaloud for classes, or for kids who are comfortable with chapter book but are scared of 200+ page tomes. There's a little bit of something everyone can enjoy in this newest Jennings number.

Great book for a 5th grader book club

My daughter's book club read this book. The club is a group of 5th graders. Her review was that book started off slow, but the middle and end of the story was awesome. The book provided a nice discussion and was fun to read. All of the girls in the book club enjoyed the book and said they would recommend it to others.

This book is dense, dense, dense

I have a political science background so I can understand what this author is trying to say. I appreciate that he backs up his claims with the results of actual studies performed to prove the same point. However, a lot of my classmates found his writing style inaccessible. You have to read every word unless you are skilled at skimming his particular style of writing. That's the kind of training I got in political science.

No worse book on the face of the planet

Do not get this book! It is confusing and boring. I had to buy this tiny book for [money] for a class taught, you guessed it, by Dr. Hall himself. It was painful and unclear (both the class and the book). Get James Q. Wilson's Bureaucracy or Jeffery Pfeffer's Managing With Power instead, you'll thank me.

Surprisingly good

Typical board exam type EKGs for IM and cardiology boards. Style of interpretation occasionally differs from what would be considered safe for boards - e.g., diagnosing LVH and LAFB, LBBB and LVH simultaneously. Best feature = references to seminal journal articles discussing criteria, prognostic implications, etc. Quick read, good yield. Will use it for lecture prep.

The global mobile communications market is booming. There are almost 250 million users worldwide and should be nearly 1 billion by early next century. Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) is the fastest-growing digital wireless technology, tripling its worldwide subscriber base between 1997 and 1998. There are already 30 million CDMA customers and, at the current growth rate, there will be 50 million by the millennium. The major markets for CDMA are North America, Latin America, and Asia (particularly Japan and Korea). In total, CDMA has been adopted by almost 50 countries around the world.

It is not hard to see the reasons for the success of CDMA. CDMA is an advanced digital technology that can offer about 7 to10 times the capacity of analog technologies and up to 6 times the capacity of digital technologies such as Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA). The speech quality provided by CDMA systems is far superior to any other digital cellular technology, particularly in difficult radio environments such as dense urban areas and mountainous regions. In both initial deployment and long-term operation, CDMA provides the most cost-effective solution for cellular operators. After an 18-month of market rollout, Personal Communications Services (PCS) providers have adequately demonstrated the power of CDMA technology to support a marketing strategy based on low prices and superior performance in key areas such as voice quality, system reliability, and handset battery life.

CDMA service providers have a strong advantage when pursuing the market to the minutes-of-use model, given the longevity of CDMA handset battery life and the higher quality of the voice signal. A recent analysis of wireless platform performance by the Telecommunications Research and Action Center (TRAC) found that CDMA outperformed other digital and analog technologies on every front, including signal quality, security, power consumption, and reliability. Although analog technology came out ahead in availability, all three digital services (GSM, IS-136 TDMA, and IS-95 CDMA) were rated equally over analog with respect to availability of enhanced service features. The TRAC study found CDMA to be superior in signal security and voice quality over the other digital air interface standards. According to TRAC, CDMA has several advantages for consumers. Lower power consumption enables CDMA handsets to support up to 4 hours of talk time or 48 hours of standby time on a single battery charge. It has also been found that the soft-handoff characteristics of CDMA lead to fewer dropped calls than with GSM and IS-136 TDMA. One possible drawback for some CDMA customers is that there are some limitations on roaming capabilities. Some PCS operators with cellular affiliates are supporting dual-mode handsets to allow roaming between CDMA and analog platforms.

CDMA technology is constantly evolving to offer customers new, advanced services. The mobile data speeds offered through CDMA phones are increasing, and new voice codecs provide speech quality close to wireline. Internet access is now available through CDMA terminals. The time will soon be at hand when CDMA service providers can further exploit the enhanced service potential of their platforms. There has been much talk of so-called third-generation (3G) data capabilities, where PCS providers will be able to compete with wireline service providers at high access speeds. PCS providers are looking ahead toward providing a range of service categories such as Internet and intranet access, multimedia applications, highspeed business transactions, and telemetry. The CDMA network offers operators a smooth evolutionary path to 3G mobile systems.

The IS-95B standard is quite flexible, enabling service providers to allocate data in increments of 8 kilobits per second (kbps) within the 1.25-megahertz (MHz) CDMA channel bandwidth based on how service providers configure software download to already-installed network controllers. This means operators can implement return data speeds at rates much lower than 64 kbps, ensuring much lower power consumption in handsets than would be the case at a full 64kbps return rate. While operators in GSM and IS-136 TDMA sectors are making efforts to ensure they won't be left behind as data becomes a factor, CDMA appears to have a clear edge in its ability to go to relatively high speeds over the existing infrastructure.

The opportunity to use the CDMA platform to add a fixed wireless service feature represents an added advantage for operators. Because CDMA has ample spectrum to provide a fixed service on top of mobile, several operators are exploring using terminals that would be able to shift the handset between fixed and mobile service, depending on where the user is. The universal handset would serve as a cordless phone in the home and as a mobile handset outside the home. The evolution to 3G will open the wireless local loop (WLL) with Public-Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and Public Data Network (PDN) access, while providing more convenient control of applications and network resources. It will also open the door to convenient global roaming, service portability, zone-based ID and billing, and global directory access. The 3G technology is even expected to support seamless satellite interworking.

With the cornucopia of benefits surrounding CDMA, it is evident that operators using this platform will have every opportunity to grow the business once the community-based strategy begins to unfold. The question is, when will they get serious about bringing these new capabilities to market?

Recently an enhanced hybrid technology combining the CDMA air interface with the GSM network has been built, tested, and evaluated. GSM operators can save over 60% in cumulative capital costs using a GSM-CDMA overlay for network expansion of the GSM network using IS-95 CDMA radio access in addition to, or as a substitute for, TDMA radio access. This combines the spectral efficiency of CDMA with all GSM features, including seamless roaming and network services. The GSM-CDMA technology provides operators with a way to serve multiple market segments economically and to offer various services on one network platform. In addition to being a cost-effective network expansion solution, GSMCDMA also paves an evolutionary path to 3G services including high-speed data, multimedia, and mobile/fixed convergence services.

CDMA is the selected approach for the 3G system, as evidenced by the proposals submitted by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), the Association Radio Industry Business CARIB), and the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA). The 3G cdma2000 uses a CDMA air interface based on the existing IS-95B standard to provide wireline-quality voice service and high-speed data services, ranging from 144 kbps for mobile users to 2 megabits per second (Mbps) for stationary users. It is important to note that cdma2000 is a core proposal of the TIA for International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT 2000). Moreover, support for cdma2000 is not limited to North America; Korean carriers have a great opportunity to provide 3G-like service with today's existing CDMA technology. Mobile data rates of up to 114 kbps and fixed peak rates beyond 1.5 Mbps are within reach before the end of the decade with today's CDMA technology. These capabilities will be provided without degrading the systems' voice transmission capabilities or requiring additional spectrum. This will have tremendous implications for the majority of operators that are spectrum constrained. A doubling of capacity and a 1.5-Mbps data rate capability within a 1.25-MHz channel structure look very appealing.

This book is an extension of the book Applications of CDMA in Wireless Communications (Garg, Smolik, and Wilkes, Prentice Hall, 1997). In that book, the primary focus was on the CDMA systems standardized by TIA and American Telecommunications Industries Standards (ATIS) as standards IS-95 and IS-665. Since the publication of that book, CDMA technology has undergone major changes and has become a viable technology for 3G systems. In this book, I discuss those aspects of CDMA that are essential to understanding system capacity. I also provide guidelines for system parameters of a CDMA network. The book outlines a migration path for CDMA to a 3G cdma2000 system.

In writing this book, I addressed the needs of practicing engineers and engineering managers by explaining CDMA concepts, system capacity, radio frequency (RF) engineering, and other important aspects of the CDMA network. Students studying courses in telecommunications will also find this book useful as they prepare for careers in the wireless industry. I included a sufficient amount of mathematics so that you can understand the operation of the CDMA network, but I tried not to overwhelm you with very complex mathematical derivations.

This book can be used by practicing telecommunications engineers involved in the design and operation of CDMA-based cellular/PCS networks as well as by senior or graduate students in electrical engineering, telecommunications engineering, and computer engineering curricula. I assume that you have some basic background in mobile communications and CDMA technology. If you don't, the book mentioned above by Garg, Smolik, and Wilkes can provide that understanding. By selectively reading pertinent chapters of that book, telecommunications managers who are engaged in managing CDMA networks but who have little or no technical background can gain enough of an understanding of CDMA systems to read this book.

This book can be divided into four segments: Chapters 1 through 4 provide a foundation for understanding the material in subsequent chapters. Chapters 5 through 11 deal with IS-95 CDMA standards, and chapters 12 and 13 provide design aspects of a CDMA system. Chapters 14 and 15 focus on the data applications in CDMA and the evolution of IS-95 (2G system) to cdma2000 (3G system) in order to satisfy ITU IMT-2000 specifications. The following is a synopsis of the subjects covered in each chapter.

Chapter 1. Major attributes of CDMA and the access technologies used for cellular/ PCS systems. Chapter 2. The different types of Spread Spectrum (SS) systems that are used. The main focus is on the Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) techniques that are employed in CDMA. I provide a relationship to calculate the performance of a CDMA system. Chapter 3. Speech and channel coding applications in the IS-95 CDMA system. Chapter 4. The concepts of diversity reception used to improve signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the system; various combining schemes used to combine the signals; some practical antennas used in the cellular telephone industry. Chapter 5. Functional entities of the wireless network and the TIA-standardized interfaces between the entities. I examine the activities of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to add Intelligent Network (IN) to wireless systems. Chapter 6. A high-level description of the IS-95 CDMA air interface, including important aspects of the forward link (base station to mobile) and reverse link (mobile to base station) and modulation parameters for the channels. Chapter 7. Modulation schemes, bit repetition, block interleaving, and channel coding; these are used in processing logical channels on the IS-95 CDMA forward and reverse links. Details about information processing, message types, and message framing are presented for the pilot, sync, paging, and traffic channels on the forward link. Similar details are provided for the access and traffic channels on the reverse link. Chapter 8. IS-95 CDMA call processing states that a mobile station (MS) goes through in getting to a traffic channel; idle handoff, slotted paging operation, CDMA registration, and authentication procedures; call flows for CDMA call origination, call termination, call release, and authentication. Chapter 9. The layering concept used to develop the protocols for IS-95 CDMA; the standardized interfaces between the functional entities, mainly the A-Interface and TIA IS-634defined MSC-BS messages, message sequencing, and mandatory timers at the BS and the MSC. The chapter also provides call flow diagrams for typical supplementary services, handoff scenarios, and Over-The-Air Service Provisioning (OTASP). Chapter 10. Handoff strategy used in IS-95 CDMA; power control schemes for the reverse and forward links. Chapter 11. Various parameters used to identify an MS including International Mobile Station Identity (IMSI), Mobile Station Number (MDN), Electronic Serial Number (ESN), and station class mark. I focus on authentication procedures, including the authentication of MS registration, MS originations, MS terminations, MS data bursts, and Temporary Mobile Station Identity (TMSI) assignment. Also discussed are unique challenge response procedures. Chapter 12. Basic guidelines for engineering a CDMA system, including a discussion of propagation models, link budgets, the transition from analog operation to CDMA operation, radio link capacity, facility engineering, border cells on a boundary between two service providers, and interfrequency handoff. Chapter 13. Procedures for calculating the capacity of the reverse and forward link of a CDMA system; a procedure to develop a link safety margin parameter for each of the forward link channels. Chapter 14. Standards for data services supported by CDMA cellular/PCS systems; highlights of the TIA IS-99, TIA IS-637, and TIA IS-657 standards. I describe the architecture for each of the four data services (e.g., packet data, asynchronous data, facsimile, and short message services) and the protocol stacks supported by these services. Chapter 15. The cdma2000, 3G evolution of IS-95. The cdma2000 Radio Transmission Technology (RTT) is a wideband, SS radio interface that uses CDMA technology to satisfy the needs of 3G wireless communication systems.

Appendix A presents traffic tables for a variety of blocking probabilities and channel numbers. Appendix B comprises a list of abbreviations I introduce in the text and that are common to the industry. The references cited in Appendix C are papers and texts that I have found useful and, when considered in addition to those cited in the text, provide a rich background for readers interested in looking into digital wireless technology in greater depth.

I suggest chapters 1-11 for those who are interested in IS-95 standards but who do not have much background in digital communications. Those who have adequate background in digital communications may skip chapters 1-4.

I recommend chapters 1, 2, 4-10, 12, and 13 for those who are involved with the design of a CDMA system. The engineering managers should use chapters 1 and 5-12 to achieve adequate knowledge of IS-95 CDMA.

I suggest chapters 1-8, 10-12, 13, and 15 for a one-semester graduate course in IS-95 CDMA and its evolution to cdma2000.

An introduction to IS-95, and a glance to CDMA2000

The book's content is organized very well. I recommend the book those readers, as it is stated in its preface, who needs an easy and smooth introduction to IS-95 and CDMA 2000, but not requiring a detailed mathematical analysis, or complex and complete systems architectures, network protocols. The book gives a good outline of IS-95 and explain the advances coming with CDMA 2000.

IS-95 CDMA and CDMA 2000

This is definitely not the right book if you do not know anything about wireless communications and you just want to have an idea of this topic. In order to understand most of the chapters you need quite a strong background on analog (AMPS) and TDMA systems(GSM). If this is the case, this book is helpful to understand all the main features of the IS-95 CDMA standard and the differences between this systems and the previously mentioned ones. The book is complete, well organized and structured even though sometimes it exceeds in details and becomes heavy to read. But if you are not interested in the mathematical parts you can easily skip to the following section without losing anything.

"cdma2000" should not be in the title of this book!

This book has only one chapter on cdma2000, most of which is a re-work of what's available from standard specifications and freely downloadable from .... The use of "cdma2000" in the title of this book is somewhat tongue-in-cheek, as the book provides little insight beyond what's readily (and cryptically) available elsewhere. The treatment of IS-95 is deeper, particularly on handoff. Coverage of power control is terse. On the whole, this book provides good grounding for IS-95 (cdmaOne), yet leaves the reader to make appropriate connections to cdma2000.
