A masterpiece in both scope and detail.........

Henri Troyat has done a superb job of crafting the life story of Leo Tolstoy into something which almost reads as a novel, a page-turner in its own right. The intimacy with which he thoroughly knows of and understands Leo Tolstoy's life and his works is nothing short of remarkable, and this is a biography I would be surprised at seeing bettered any time down the road. Tolstoy is on view for all to see, from his world-renowned works, to personal letters written to close acquaintances, to his own personal diary, Troyat makes use of every available resource to give us an up close and personal view of Tolstoy's life. The research done in comprising this most thorough work of Tolstoy's life is simply astonishing. Troyat has crafted a masterpiece which is fun to read, though admittedly this was made a tad easier as it was biography of Tolstoy's life he had to work with.

Tolstoy is a man of many dichotomies and this is at least partly what makes his life so very interesting. He was one of the greatest writers of all time, yet he despised literature. He inspired a peace movement led by Gandhi, and yet at one time owned peasants (admittedly early on in his life). He wrote of how life should be lived, and yet could not get along with his own wife (and wound up dying in a train station at the age of 82). The life of Leo Tolstoy cannot be summarized in a few short paragraphs, and even if it could, it would be doing a great man a grave injustice. Tolstoy deserves a biography which is comprehensive in depth and contains details not only of his life but also of his works......Troyat has given us this. And throughout this book, Troyat draws comparisons between Tolstoy and characters in his literature, such as the time his brothers dragged him to a brothel at the age of 17, leaving him to feel ashamed afterwards (while in one of his works the character visits a brothel only to cry at the edge of the bed afterwards). Many other examples abound throughout the narrative where Tolstoy writes himself into his works. But the average reader would probably not be able to distinguish when Tolstoy in fact does this without the exceptional work of Henri Troyat. Throughout the book it is all too evident that this was a work which Troyat put his heart and soul into, giving us insight into a great man whose life was so wide-ranging, from his early life in Moscow, to his middle years in the Caucauses, to his later years on Yasnaya Polyana. Tolstoy deserves a biography which is a masterpiece in both scope and detail....and Henri Troyat has provided this magnificently.

Enlightening!

This book is very informative yet reads as lively as a Tolstoy novel. Reading this before, during, or after you read "War and Peace" is very enlightening. Interesting the fact that the author of "War and Peace" struggled with history in school and exclaimed that history was "nothing but a heap of myths and useless, trivial details, sprinkled with dates and names". Other wisdoms include "Bronchitis is an imaginary disease! Bronchitis is a metal!" Highly entertaining. I had to deduct one star due to the fact that there is not one picture in this biography which I find quite odd.

Overly detailed and opinionated

Tolstoy's biography by Troyat is thoroughly documented, and Tolstoy certainly is an interesting subject for a book. I recommend it for people looking for an authoritative source of information.
However, taken as a book to be read, not referenced, it has serious flaws. The main one, which I find inexcusable, is Troyat's comments throughout the book "explaining" Tolstoy to the reader, and being shocked at Tolstoy's inconsistencies. Troyat will show us a scene where Tolstoy lays down a plan for virtuous conduct in his diary, then breaks his own code. Troyat exclaims: "Paradox! Tolstoy is a strange man, breaking his own code". Well, Mr. Troyat, don't we all?
Then, at another instance, he will characterize, say, Turgenev's judgement of Tolstoy, as "lacking in psychology". Troyat, of course, would have known better. In other words, Troyat doesn't try to erase himself from the book, we see his footprints all over. The book should have been named "Troyat's superior knowledge of Tolstoy".
Another related problem with this book is excessive documentation. We are witness to too many changes of opinion in Tolstoy. For, say, his doubts about his feelings for Sofya Bers, this is revealing, but we are subjected to the same ceremony for each acquaintance made by Tolstoy. The point was well taken from the beginning: Tolstoy changed his opinion of himself and others very often. And again, I don't see this as strange: many people are like that. But by the fourth time I saw Tolstoy meet someone, then write on successive days "Excellent" "Superficial" "Vain" "Far superior to me" etc. I was about to give up on the book. In contrast, we don't see enough of what others thought of Tolstoy, and that is a pity, especially since the book's excessive focus on Tolstoy's inner struggle makes it grey and humorless.
To sum it up: can serve well as a reference book, but not as a novel. Read Tolstoy himself, he is more revealing.

About the Author
Dr. Eric Cole is an industry recognized security expert, technology visionary and scientist, with over 15 year’s hands-on experience. Dr. Cole currently performs leading edge security consulting and works in research and development to advance the state of the art in information systems security. Dr. Cole has over a decade of experience in information technology, with a focus on perimeter defense, secure network design, vulnerability discovery, penetration testing, and intrusion detection systems. Dr. Cole has a Masters in Computer Science from NYIT, and Ph.D. from Pace University with a concentration in Information Security. Dr. Cole is the author of several books to include Hackers Beware, Hiding in Plain Site, Network Security Bible and Insider Threat. A solid grounding in security

I would like to start off with the bottom line first. There is a LOT of great information in the book, but the layout of the book makes it a bit hard to find the key points even with the incredibly detailed table of contents. Syngress should adopt call outs, text boxes and other publishing techniques to highlight key information instead of producing one huge "run on" manuscript.

In light of that what I would like to do in this review is highlight some of the practical tips in the book. A major theme is that while protection is ideal, detection is a must. Dr. Cole, a practitioner in the field, has learned what we all need to understand. The odds are very high that any organization is already compromised. The key is to detect the information as the attackers try to exfiltrate it.

Some other points, that are not to be missed:
Page 15 Do not allow HTML mail unless you absolutely need it for your business
Page 16 Do not allow documents with macros unless you absolutely need it for your business
Page 29 Activity does not equal security, tackle the highest priority risk
Page 31 Assume the attackers are already in your network
Page 39 Focus on protecting your critical data (data centric security)
Page 71 237 rules in your firewall equals ANY ANY ANY ANY - ALLOW
Page 91 The advice here will not be popular, but if you do not absolutely need it for your business, get rid of it
Page 107 The entire section on data classification is a must read, must implement
Page 140 More hard, but valuable advice, do not allow email attachments unless you absolutely need them for your business
Page 176 Repeat after me, users are the target, this is the root of most successful attacks
Page 193 Begins a section on the 20 Critical Controls - read, memorize and act
Page 212 You cannot fight the cloud (amen)
Page 234 The APT Defendable Network section is a must read
Page 243 Expands on the points on page 29, glad that got fleshed out
Chapter 11 talks about some common sense solutions including sandboxing and whitelisting. For the life of me, I cannot understand why more organizations have not adopted both
Chapter 12 is essentially a recap. A suggestion to the reader is read chapter 12 first. It is filled with a number of key points that you can pick up when you read the rest of the book.

Great Book that will make you Work, and Think

Very good set of ideas & concepts very badly presented. Core ideas and strategic approach to defending against APTs is very good, possibly brilliant. Reader must be willing to fight through horrible structure and terrible editing to extract them, however. Not an easy read. Like mining gold or diamonds, you'll need to bring heavy machinery to get what you want. Buried in this mess is a great book. Somewhere. In the end: worth the work.

Plenty of people could have written a book on the APT, but Dr. Cole has the vast experience across multiple industries to write the definitive book.

This could have been merely a "fun" and easy to read book capitalizing on the latest buzzwords, terms, and acronyms like APT, and that could have been good.

Instead this book, which while a fun read, has practical advice from in the trenches on how to combat persistent and dedicated attackers who often have vast resources, such as that of nation-states and other formidable adversaries.

No hype, just what works, and with a fascinating section on "The Future and How to Win."

The best book on the Engineering profession available

I first read this book when it came out - while I was in college. It's interesting to re-read it 30 years later with the perspective of what became of the Eclipse MV8000, Data General, Digital Equipment, and the other non-human Dramatis Personae. As far as the people - who knows: it's easier to follow the history of an industry than the people who comprise it. But it's the people that Kidder wisely focuses upon.

What comes through is the passion that a group of people have for their work - the long hours, the camaraderie, and the joy of creation. I confess - as an engineer it tweaks me when artists dismiss the profession. Engineering is the act of creation just as much as art is - with one added requirement: the creation must be useful. The technology in the book is archaic, but the process is the same today in Silicon Valley as then in Westboro, Mass. In fact, it's the requirement for utility that consigns most engineering creation to the scrap heap in short order - that's how it's supposed to be. It's still a pleasure to do the work, and that is evident in this book.

I think that reading this book helps explain something: I've never met an engineer unhappy about his or her career choice - try finding an attorney that skips to work. Is it hard to keep sharp at the cutting edge? Absolutely - the MV8000 was a market failure, Data General went under in the 1992 recession, and mighty Digital (once the largest private employer in Massachusetts and New Hampshire) was bought in a fire sale by Compaq for access to the Alpha CPU architecture - which went unused and was scrapped when Compaq was acquired by Hewlett-Packard. The same HP that laid the cornerstone for Silicon Valley and now makes money selling over-priced printer cartridges. You drive in the fast lane, you get in a wreck or two. But it is FUN to drive in the fast lane!

Just as good the second time around

I first read Tracy Kidder's book "The Soul of a New Machine" in the early 1980s, shortly after its publication in 1981. At the time I was intrigued and interested in the process and detail of engineering required to bring a new computer to market; and I was fascinated by the leadership/management skills employed by the key character to "motivate" the team. I thought it was a great read.

That was nearly thirty years ago.

Recently, I mentioned this book in a conversation with a colleague and subsequently decided to read it again. I hoped it would be as good as I thought it was the first time, but I was skeptical. Technology has changed a lot; and both the MV/8000 and Data General Corporation are now long gone. Would "The Soul of a New Machine" still be as gripping a story as it was originally? The answer, in a word, is YES!

In rereading the book in 2011, I was struck by the diversity of the team engaged in this effort, the various work methods and styles that had to come together for success. Kidder introduces the reader to a wonderful cast of characters who worked incredible hours and faced enormous time pressures under great stress for months and months to birth a new computer.

It may sound simple, but it wasn't. "The Soul of a New Machine" is a gripping, circuitous, wonderful tale of a dream and the team that brought it to life.

An awesome documentary style book on the reality of what drives a project to completion

This book is a non-fiction account of the development of a mini-computer in the 1980s. The book begins by describing the background: Data General, a computer company, has been recently leapfrogged by a competitor who put out a 32-bit mini computer system over their 16-bit system. To keep up with their major competitor (DEC), the company begins a development project for their own 32-bit mini computer.

The company HQ is based in Massachusetts. What complicates matters is that the CEO establishes a new R&D center in North Carolina where he hopes the new 32-bit mini computer will be built. The new R&D center however, creates a major rift between the engineers who stayed in Massachusetts and the ones who work in North Carolina - as both groups want to be in charge of development. A major feud begins, but basically the group in North Carolina wins and gets to build the new 32-bit system.

However, the story begins in Massachusetts....

Tom West, an engineering manager in Massachusetts, manages to convince the management that it would be worthwhile to have a 'back-up' 32-bit computer system, that was perhaps backwards compatible with their old 16-bit systems. It would be a sort of 'insurance' so to speak in case development efforts in North Carolina took too long.

With a handful of experienced engineers as team leaders, he recruits essentially fresh college graduates and works the hell out of them to create a rival 32-bit computer system.

Over the course of the book, it becomes apparent that the North Carolina facility - despite having more resources, money, engineers, etc. - will not in fact be able to launch their product in a timely fashion. West's team of new recruits really does need to release their product in order for the company to continue competing in the mini-computer market.

The book is not written so much on the technical details of the project, but rather is more of a 'documentary' of the experience of being on the product development team.

The level of detail this book captures, and at each level (from West's perspective, the perspective of a number of the fresh college graduates, his experienced Team Leaders who speculated on West's motives in driving everyone so hard, the background situation of the company and management) is perfect.

Looking back historically, one could easily just conclude that the Massachusetts team succeeded for all sorts of technical reasons. But there were a lot of interesting human reasons for why the project succeeded. For one, the project should have never been started in Massachusetts in the first place. The company management did not seem to have any clear idea of what to put their engineers to work on (or even really know what they were working on) and a wily manager was able to sneak the project by, masquerading it as something else.

As engineer on a product development team for a robotic system, I can 100% relate to this book.

The ridiculous management decisions, the company politics, engineers working insane hours on esoteric problems, the strange culture of engineers, the product launch and general lack of appreciation for the engineer's work afterwards - it's amazingly well captured in this book, and I was surprised at how my current company and previous company experiences relate so strongly to the product development described here.

What I liked most about it, was that a lot of the decisions made by West, the company, etc were highly irrational, if you looked at them from the company perspective. The company SHOULD have only had one group working on the development project. West SHOULD have explained to his team the importance of what they were working on and perhaps been more involved on the day to day decisions of the project, just as the VP of Engineering SHOULD have been more cognizant of what West's entire team was up to. (The author writes about 'mushroom management' in the book - keep 'em in the dark and feed 'em *edited by Amazon Censors*). But in reality, for often political reasons, feuds, the strange driven personality of a particular manager, the strange management practices of the CEO, all of these mistakes get made, and yet a 32-bit mini computer gets built and saves the company in the end anyway.

It's a great book because it is all true.

I am not sure how interesting this would be for someone that doesn't work in product development, but for me, I see this mistakes made in my company every day. It's amazing how much individual personalities, and strange coincidences can drive a project.

The definition of La Douleur Exquise is the heart wrenching pain of wanting someone you can't have, and this book from J.R. Rogue lives up to its title. The poems contained within the pages are heart wrenching, and soul consuming. They are real, and I felt all of the heart ache that Rogue pulled from the depths of her soul.I tried to pick a piece from the book that I could choose as a favorite, but the fact is that I found myself identifying with everything. J.R. Rogue is a part time writer and a full time reader. I discovered her because one of my favorite authors posted some of her work on Instagram. I immediately fell in love with the sadness in her words and was looking for more of her work. I was so excited when I found out she was releasing a collection of her work and immediately pre-ordered this. This surpassed all of my expectations! I can't describe the emotional puddle I become every time I read this.

You can feel Jen’s pain through her tragic words. It's amazing how intimate poetry can be, it feels like she gave us a huge part of herself. Her words read like a classic already. She is easily my new favorite poet of our time!!!

Thought-Provoking and Genuine.

"For every lover who has tasted the unrequited kind, too many times."

Before I even began reading the poems, from just this line, I knew this would be a great read. I connected instantaneously and the poems that followed surely didn't disappoint. J.R. Rogue writes in such a raw, honest way - it's beautiful.

It reads like a journey, rather than a random string of poems. It's very cathartic, I was completely unable put it down - at the beginning, I related so strongly to that heartache, but by the end I wanted to feel that same release felt in the last poem. I love that it's honest, I love that it doesn't sugarcoat love as something that is always beautiful and perfect, but simultaneously still offers the hope that things will improve and we can stitch ourselves up and continue on. Highly recommend.

Emotive poetry for those who love and have once loved

I'm a lover of the poetry J.R. Rogue shares for free on Instagram. I wanted to support and thank her for sharing her emotive words with us and purchasing this collection with the lovely, illustrated cover was definitely the way to go.

I thought I was going to read only a couple poems a day (ya know, spread them out a bit) but then I finished it in a day. No regrets lol. Although I will be returning to this collection again after I experience a heartbreak like these.

The digital signal processing (DSP) revolution has drastically changed the way electronic circuits are designed. It has brought new possibilities that were once deemed impossible using conventional analog circuitry. Digital signal processors are used in CD players, cellular telephones, music synthesizers, and high-speed modems, to name just a few of the items that are now considered among the necessities of life. What magic makes these marvelous devices work? What do readers need to know to start using this technology? The goal of this book is to introduce readers to DSP so that they can incorporate some of this technology into their designs.

This book is based on seven years of experience teaching this subject at the college level. The goal is for readers to understand the fundamentals of DSP so that they may design and implement signal synthesis, signal analysis, filters, and modulators on any digital signal processor. The book provides readers the background necessary to attend seminars and to further their studies.

It is widely recognized that the mathematics supporting DSP prevents many good technically-oriented people from studying the subject. The challenge was to find an approach that would be both intuitive and familiar to undergraduate students. Since vector arithmetic is used very early in most technology programs to explain the basics of most scientific topics, this book relies on these simple arrows along with some of the basic rules of mathematics to introduce the subject. This allows the use of an intuitive graphical approach. Readers will be surprised at how fast they become familiar with the material. They will quickly acquire enough DSP literacy to understand the basics that drive this technology and the major issues that drive practical designs. In the process, they will acquire the basic knowledge to implement simple DSP applications.

This book delivers enough of the basics so readers can use many features of the readily available filter design software packages that automatically perform most of the math. For example, readers will be able to use filter design software packages to design almost any of the standard filters, including Butterworth and Chebyshev filters. Readers will then be able to program these filters onto a digital signal processor of their choice. Additionally, the equations that are developed in this book may be exercised using popular number-calculating software such as spreadsheets. TARGET AUDIENCE

It is assumed that readers are either engineers who have forgotten a good deal of math or undergraduate students who understand the basics of passive circuits such as RC networks. Readers should also have some elementary programming background and an understanding of simple binary systems. Two appendices thoroughly review vector arithmetic and binary manipulation concepts to help readers comprehend the material.

Most of the complicated math and calculus is used only on rare occasions to provide a reference for the curious. In cases of mathematical derivations, readers can skip to the bottom line where the result is explained in simple, practical terms.

This book is well suited to cover an undergraduate course in the second year of a technology or engineering program. It is particularly well adapted to computer engineering or electronics technology programs. The material covered will provide graduates with a fundamental understanding of one of the essential high-tech tools to face today's technological challenges. ORGANIZATION OF THE TEXT

Chapter 1 answers the most common question newcomers ask about DSP: "How do digital signal processors differ from other types of processors?" The chapter links readers' elementary programming knowledge to the DSP environment. It also provides readers the terminology required to comprehend most seminars that cover new processors. The content of this chapter is not essential to cover Chapters 2 through 8, but it does provide some of the background necessary to cover Chapter 9.

Chapter 2 provides a painless introduction to the things that can be done with strings of numbers. Strictly speaking, this chapter does not cover digital signal processing; however, it does provide some of the basics about signals, which readers need to understand the following chapters. It introduces continuous-time and discrete-time concepts and explains periodic signals, as well as harmonic components, by using the practical application of signal synthesis. The material covered in this chapter also provides opportunities to explore many applications in a laboratory environment.

Chapter 3 focuses on some of the most important properties that relate to digital signals. The material covered here is essential to understanding all of the other chapters. Subjects such as the sampling theorem, antialiasing input filters, and reconstructing output filters are concepts that must be learned in order to deal with any DSP system.

Chapter 4 deals with the basic hardware aspects of DSP systems. It examines the system philosophically as a black box and develops theories that explain what happens inside the box. The chapter presents the difference equation, which is used to define the operation of filter systems. It also introduces the impulse response technique that may be used to test systems and develops a simple criterion to determine system stability. The important convolution operation is also developed in this chapter.

Chapter 5 is devoted entirely to spectral analysis. The approach is completely unconventional because it relies on some of the synthesis rules to develop the analysis technique. It is also unconventional in its uses of vectors to illustrate the operation of the discrete Fourier transform.

Chapter 6 is concerned with the frequency response of systems. It develops a technique that uses the value of the difference equation coefficients to compute the gain and phase response of systems. The discrete-time Fourier transform is an invaluable tool to determine the frequency domain behavior of systems. The chapter also examines the response of DAC systems, which are part of almost all DSP systems. The concept of an equalizer is introduced and used to compensate for undesired frequency characteristics.

Chapter 7 develops the Z-transform, which is used to design the response of systems. It uses the concept of poles and zeros to build the system response. A graphical method using vectors provides readers an intuitive approach in positioning poles and zeros. Important concepts such as stability are explored, and practical aspects such as coefficient quantizing are examined. Oscillator systems are designed based on the positioning of poles and on trigonometric identities.

Chapter 8 is a filter primer that describes the various popular types of filters. It covers filter concepts such as filter bands, linear-phase filters, phase equalizers (all pass), and describes the characteristics of standard filters such as the Bessel, Butterworth, and Chebyshev. Design techniques, such as the bilinear transform, windowing, and the positioning of poles and zeros to implement narrowband notch filters, are also described.

Chapter 9 covers the implementation of DSP systems using some of the most popular programming structures. It develops the various structures and identifies the strengths and weaknesses of each. FIR filters are implemented using both the direct form and the cascaded form. IIR filters are implemented using a cascade of both direct form II and transposed structures. Basic concepts of noise control are introduced and applied to programming techniques. Issues of scaling are addressed using practical examples.

Appendix A reviews complex arithmetic as applied to vectors. It covers complex numbers, complex exponentials, and Euler's identity, and develops the algebra necessary to manipulate complex numbers and vectors. It also defines magnitude, angle, and argument and shows how to plot complex numbers and vectors on an Argand diagram.

Appendix B reviews the binary systems, formats, and manipulations necessary for programming DSP applications. It covers fixed-point and floating-point numbers, addition, multiplication, quantization, and tolerance. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Additionally, the equations that are developed in this book may be exercised using popular number-calculating software such as spreadsheets.

TARGET AUDIENCE

It is assumed that readers are either engineers who have forgotten a good deal of math or undergraduate students who understand the basics of passive circuits such as RC networks. Readers should also have some elementary programming background and an understanding of simple binary systems. Two appendices thoroughly review vector arithmetic and binary manipulation concepts to help readers comprehend the material.

Most of the complicated math and calculus is used only on rare occasions to provide a reference for the curious. In cases of mathematical derivations, readers can skip to the bottom line where the result is explained in simple, practical terms.

This book is well suited to cover an undergraduate course in the second year of a technology or engineering program. It is particularly well adapted to computer engineering or electronics technology programs. The material covered will provide graduates with a fundamental understanding of one of the essential high-tech tools to face today's technological challenges.

ORGANIZATION OF THE TEXT

Chapter 1 answers the most common question newcomers ask about DSP: "How do digital signal processors differ from other types of processors?" The chapter links readers' elementary programming knowledge to the DSP environment. It also provides readers the terminology required to comprehend most seminars that cover new processors. The content of this chapter is not essential to cover Chapters 2 through 8, but it does provide some of the background necessary to cover Chapter 9.

Chapter 2 provides a painless introduction to the things that can be done with strings of numbers. Strictly speaking, this chapter does not cover digital signal processing; however, it does provide some of the basics about signals, which readers need to understand the following chapters. It introduces continuous-time and discrete-time concepts and explains periodic signals, as well as harmonic components, by using the practical application of signal synthesis. The material covered in this chapter also provides opportunities to explore many applications in a laboratory environment.

Chapter 3 focuses on some of the most important properties that relate to digital signals. The material covered here is essential to understanding all of the other chapters. Subjects such as the sampling theorem, antialiasing input filters, and reconstructing output filters are concepts that must be learned in order to deal with any DSP system.

Chapter 4 deals with the basic hardware aspects of DSP systems. It examines the system philosophically as a black box and develops theories that explain what happens inside the box. The chapter presents the difference equation, which is used to define the operation of filter systems. It also introduces the impulse response technique that may be used to test systems and develops a simple criterion to determine system stability. The important convolution operation is also developed in this chapter.

Chapter 5 is devoted entirely to spectral analysis. The approach is completely unconventional because it relies on some of the synthesis rules to develop the analysis technique. It is also unconventional in its uses of vectors to illustrate the operation of the discrete Fourier transform.

Chapter 6 is concerned with the frequency response of systems. It develops a technique that uses the value of the difference equation coefficients to compute the gain and phase response of systems. The discrete-time Fourier transform is an invaluable tool to determine the frequency domain behavior of systems. The chapter also examines the response of DAC systems, which are part of almost all DSP systems. The concept of an equalizer is introduced and used to compensate for undesired frequency characteristics.

Chapter 7 develops the Z-transform, which is used to design the response of systems. It uses the concept of poles and zeros to build the system response. A graphical method using vectors provides readers an intuitive approach in positioning poles and zeros. Important concepts such as stability are explored, and practical aspects such as coefficient quantizing are examined. Oscillator systems are designed based on the positioning of poles and on trigonometric identities.

Chapter 8 is a filter primer that describes the various popular types of filters. It covers filter concepts such as filter bands, linear-phase filters, phase equalizers (all pass), and describes the characteristics of standard filters such as the Bessel, Butterworth, and Chebyshev. Design techniques, such as the bilinear transform, windowing, and the positioning of poles and zeros to implement narrowband notch filters, are also described.

Chapter 9 covers the implementation of DSP systems using some of the most popular programming structures. It develops the various structures and identifies the strengths and weaknesses of each. FIR filters are implemented using both the direct form and the cascaded form. IIR filters are implemented using a cascade of both direct form II and transposed structures. Basic concepts of noise control are introduced and applied to programming techniques. Issues of scaling are addressed using practical examples.

Appendix A reviews complex arithmetic as applied to vectors. It covers complex numbers, complex exponentials, and Euler's identity, and develops the algebra necessary to manipulate complex numbers and vectors. It also defines magnitude, angle, and argument and shows how to plot complex numbers and vectors on an Argand diagram.

Appendix B reviews the binary systems, formats, and manipulations necessary for programming DSP applications. It covers fixed-point and floating-point numbers, addition, multiplication, quantization, and tolerance.

Very Usefull and Interesting intro into DSP

I've a Mechanical Engineering background, I've always been deterred from delving into the world of DSP by complexities involved. However reading this book has enabled me to do some serious work using the current microprocessors and the available programming libraries which tackle almost all fundamental mathematical chores. If you're like me, don't waste this opportunity to introduce yourself to a very interesting domain.
