About the Author
Ayres served with the 82nd Airborne and the 7th Special Forces Group (Green Berets) and worked as a private contractor with various U.S. government organizations. During the past decade Ayres has written dozens of articles and stories for Blade Magazine and the Knives annual book, both published by F+W Media.

Excellent, but Aggravating

This an excellent book with a lot of great first-hand information on knives and their usage, and is well worth the price. The author did an excellent job, and whetted my appetite for an autobiography from him. He has obviously BTDT and knows his subject thoroughly.
My only gripes on the book are with the photos and captions. There were a couple of captions that obviously did not match the photos they were with and careful proofing should have caught these.
Secondly, and probably of lesser importance, I have never before seen a book with such intrusive copyright notifications. Putting them into the photo captions without at least changing the size and style of the font was quite distracting and eventually quite irritating.

Great Book!

The Tactical Knife is an instant classic. It's the book on tactical knives that blade aficionados have been waiting for for more than a decade. Personal anecdotes, testing standards and a logical but EXPERIENCED approach to the topic are what really set the book apart. The fact that the writer is a skilled wordsmith doesn't hurt either :).

Look Elsewhere

This book reads like the author got all of his information from youtube reviews and forums, without bothering to differentiate between the informed and uninformed opinions. Some of the information is correct, but some of it is also clearly wrong. The author lacks any knowledge of important knife aspects like steel composition, ergos, and edge geometry. Based on some of the knives he chose to include, I'm not sure he even has a clear idea of what a tactical knife is (Seems like he just added it into the title to sell copies). He gives short positive reviews for everything rather than explain the features that make the knife good or bad. He encourages readers to go out and buy knives that were discontinued even at the time of the writing, and he omits many important newer models he could have talked about. The book is full of blatant typos, misspellings, and unfinished sentences, and is written with the literary tone of a middle schooler. I've looked carefully through this book, but I can't find any redeeming qualities.
